Course Objectives 5
1. Describe the meaning and importance of human factors engineering
including its role in the design lifecycle of products and systems;
2. Describe and apply the major human factors engineering design
principles for products and systems;
3. Apply major human factors and work measurement engineering
design principles to the analysis and design of products and
systems;
4. Evaluate the compatibility of products and systems with regard to
human capacities, limitations and safety;
5. Acquire and statistically analyze data relevant to human systems
performance;
6. Identify the role of ethics in human subjects research; and
7. Communicate effectively in reports.

HF is not common sense!
• Knowing how long it take a pilot to
respond to a warning light in a busy flight
is hard.
• Same thing with specifying a “safe”
weight limit for lifting workers.

Why do we care? 21
To control issues such as:
• Inefficiency
• Fatigue
• Accidents/Injuries
• Errors
• Quality
• User Difficulties/Dissatisfaction
• Low Morale/Apathy

Bad Design Assignment 22
What bad designs do you see around
Riyadh?
•Describe why it’s a bad design, how it
could be fixed, and categorize it into the
emerging concerns (or is it something totally
different…)
•Picture(s)
