PRINCIPLES AND TECHNIQUES

IN TRANSLATION AND LEXICOGRAPHY

Directions: Translate the following writings into a Filipino version. Afterwards, create an insights
for each writings translated consisting; what are the problems you encountered? What are the
solutions you applied? What method of translation did you used? Why? 

Note: 1 writing is equal to 1 insight.

Writing No. 1 

Three wishes

I wish I were a pretty bird,

I’d fly high up in the sky

And see how other creatures live,

How they let time go by.

I wish I were a mango tree

With a million golden flowers,

I would let each bird and bee

Build its nest among my bowers.

But most of all I’d like to be

A very bright and healthy boy;

I’d serve my parents and my friends,

I’d bring them love and joy.

Writing no. 1 Translation

Tatlong Kahilingan

Sana ako’y isang ibong marikit,


Nakalilipad sa mataas na langit

At mamasdan kung pa’nong oras,

Ang mga nilalang nagpapalipas.

Sana ako’y isang punong mangga

Na namumukadkad ang mga bunga,

Sa ibon at bubuyog ako’y papayag

Sa aking lilim ay mamugad.

At higit sa lahat, aking hiling

Maging lalaking malusog at matalino rin

Upang paglingkuran kaibiga’t magulang

Sila’y hahandugan tuwa’t pagmamahal.

Writing No. 1 Insights

In some of the stanzas the techniques that I used are Addition or expansion,
Transposition shifting in sentence construction, and Modulation. The common literary problems
that I encountered were alliteration, allusion, and syntax. First is alliteration for the reason that
the repetition of the same sound at the beginning of successive words was very hard to find a
rhyme with the same meaning. Second was allusion for seeking to give a stronger edge to the
idea being made by the literary writer and lastly syntax to keep the literariness of the said piece.

Writing No. 2

The Tree

Perhaps I shall never see

A poem as lovely as a tree,

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed

Against the earth’s sweet flowing beast;

A tree who looks at God all day

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree who may in summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair

Upon whose bosom snow has lain,

Who intimately lives with rain?

Poems are made by fools like me,

But only God can make a tree!


Writing No. 2 Translation

Ang Puno

Sa tingin ko hindi na ako makakakita pa

Ng tulang singrikit nitong punong kaaya-aya

Bibig na tikom sa pagkakadikit di ibig maalis

Sa mundong ang daloy ng buhay, walang singtamis

Sa mukha ng Diyos lamang maghapon nakatingin

Na ang mga daho’y daup palad na nananalangin

Kung tag-init malagong daho’y naglalagasan

Ng pugad ng ibong pugad ng kaligayahan

Sa kanyang lilim, ang kalinisa’y umiidlip

Sa buhos ng ulan animo’y nakikipagtalik

Sinong mamumuhay kapiling ang ulan?

Tula’y nagagawa ng tulad kong hangal,

Ngunit itong puno, nakagagawa’y Diyos lamang!

Writing No. 2 Insights

Just like the first poem, the techniques that I used are Addition or expansion,
Transposition shifting in sentence construction, and Modulation. The difficulties that I
encountered mostly is alliteration. Because the repetition of the same sound at the end of every
line was very hard to find a rhyme with the same meaning. Using an English-Filipino was really a
great help in translating this poem.

Writing No. 3

My Child

Sleep now, my child

Whom I picked from the grass

Playing with an owl

And who has three batubalani

Sleep now, my unding

Whom I picked from the cliff

Playing with an angel

And who has six batubalani

Writing no. 3 Translation

Aking Anak
Tulog na aking anak

Siyang natagpuan sa damo

Sa kwago’y nakikipaglaro

At mayroong tatlong batubalani

Tulog na aking unding

Siyang natagpuan sa bangin

Nakikipaglaro sa anghel

At mayroong anim na batubalani

Writing No. 3 Insights

This poem is a little easy for me, since this was just a two-stanza poem. Another thing is
that some words are already in Filipino words, so I just need to retain it but still not
compromising its meaning, I used the technique Addition or expansion. Because most of the
English words when translated to Filipino will really create longer phrases. I encounter difficulty
in looking for words that will suffice the loan words and its meaning. But I make sure to still give
and convey the message of the poem even some of the translations are not literally interpreted.

Writing No. 4

Lullaby Baby

Come I’ll take you on my lap

Put you in the cradle wrap you up in diapers

God will have mercy on us this coming week

I’ll buy you a doll and a ring

Even if you’re able to buy and keep changing clothes

Though you have many clothes, they’ll surely tear

In love it’s the same

If you keep changing lovers, you won’t get anywhere.

Writing No. 4 Translation

Tulog na Anak

Halika sa aking bisig

Dito sa kuna yakap ng lampin

Sa mga araw na darating Diyos ay may awa

Makabibili ng iyong singsing at manika


Kung ika’y makabibili ng sari-saring damit

Madami man ay masisira rin

Gayundin sa pag-ibig

Di makapamimili kung ika’y papalit-palit.

Writing No. 4 Insights

Another lullaby poem, which I really struggled. Because just the word lullaby it is one of
the words that has no direct translation in Filipino. It is interpreted to its closest meaning in
Filipino word. I use the technique Transposition shifting in sentence construction, and
alliteration as well. The common literary problems I found is that it is a different attack on a
lullaby poem. Its meaning on the first stanza differs on the message it wants to convey on the
last stanza. Therefore, translating it into Filipino is really a struggle for me, but still I manage and
try to retain its true essence.

Among the Flowers

Among the flowers

There grew a sampaguita

Near the ilang-ilang

Also nearby was the sampaka

There grew a Jasmin

A beautiful as the morning

As sweet as love

And as delicious as hope

Writing No. 5 Translation

Sa tungkos ng mga Bulaklak

Sa tungkos ng mga bulaklak

Sampaguita’y lumago

Sa ilang-ilang ay nag-abot

Ang Sampaka ri’y naroon

Ang Hasmin ay sumibol

Umaga’y sing-alindog

Singtamis ng pag-irog

At singlinamnam ng pag-asa.

Writing No. 5 Insights

Just starting with the title, I already got confused. So, I really need to understand the
wholeness of the poem before translating it line by line. I used the Modulation technique on this
one. The common literary problems that I encountered was allusion. I emphasized allusion for
seeking to give a stronger edge to the idea being made by the literary writer. Since this poem
has lots of figurative meaning, as we all know, flowers symbolize tons of connotative meaning, I
manage to still give and convey the rightful impact on the tone of the poem.

Writing No. 6

The loggers

When I think about my lot,

On this day daily work I do,

What joy cutting woods brings me!

For it is our livelihood

My wife and all our children,

They all eat their meals on time;

At the fall of each tree in the woods

There’s a chance to borrow money.

Writing No. 6 Translation

Ang Mga Magtotroso

Sa t’wing maiisip ang aking lupain,

Sa pang-araw-araw na aking gawain,

Pagtotroso’y tuwa ang saki’y hatid!

Sapagkat ito ang kinabubuhay

Ng aking asawa’t aming mga supling,

Hatid ay sapat na aming makakain;

Sa bawat punong mabubuwal

Kita at pag-asa ang iniluluwal.

Writing No. 6 Insights

I am very satisfied on my translation on this poem. I think I give justification on the


author’s purpose and message. I used the technique Transposition shifting in sentence
construction on this poem. Though I struggled on rhyming since the repetition of the same
sound at the end of every line was very hard to find a rhyme with the same meaning. With the
help of my co-teachers in the Filipino Department I found the suitable words in interpreting this
poem.

As a conclusion, translation is the means wherein the meaning, style, and information
piece of a written text in one human language is reproduced in another written human
language. Translation is the communication of meaning from one language or the source
language to another language or the target language. It is, therefore, the transference of
linguistic components from the source language to the target language with a very
consideration on the cultural aspects of languages concerned.
