1.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this method of statement is to define the procedures to ensure that the proposed
materials and workmanship to be used at the site are complying with the condition / requirements as
stipulated in the Contracts specifications.

2.0 SCOPE
This method statement covers the requirements for all earth works up to and including the
preparation of formation level. This method statement describes the controlling elements during the
exaction of earthworks.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION-EASTERN REGIONAL HOSPITAL-PHASE 1

6.0 SAFETY, HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

 Health and Safety conditions and precautions in accordance with the CESMP Plan listed in the
project specifications shall be followed as clearly indicated.
 All staff involved in the project shall be inducted on the safety, health and environmental issues
associated with the work.
 Only trained personnel with relevant experience shall be allowed to handle machinery.
 Appropriate Safety gears, barriers and lighting and other safeguards shall be provided as
required by the nature of and location of the works. All operations shall be carried out in
accordance with the CESMP safety requirements for this project.
 All field personnel will use PPE safety requirements like safety shoes, helmets, cover all, dust
mask, etc ad required.

7.0 EXCAVATION METHODOLOGY

SETTING OUT:
 Prior to the commencement of excavation works on the project site, our land surveyor shall
carry out the demarcation and setting out of the building corners in coordination with the
excavation layouts and the master plan. Prior to this activity he shall confirm and establish
bench marks on site with Construction manager and Surveyor in Principal. Upon obtaining all
the necessary survey data, a joint survey to check existing ground levels shall be carried out
with the Construction manager.
 We shall demarcate a 3m Excavation line from the established building corners to define the
extent of excavation.
 We shall extract the survey coordinate points from the master plan and mark out the building
corners on grounds.

2
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION-EASTERN REGIONAL HOSPITAL-PHASE 1

PREPARATION OF SITE:
All unsuitable material and surplus suitable material shall be run to spoil in tips at the proposed car
park areas approved by the Construction manager for stock piling in order to keep the designated area
for the main hospital building free for equipments and labor movement.

EXCAVATION WORKS
 The excavation works shall start from Zone A and continue from Zone B in that sequence
towards Zone C as indicated in the main building zonal distribution layout plan Fig.1 which
shall be attached to this document for reference.
 The excavation of cutting shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant approved
Excavation drawings and to the levels, widths and heights shown in the Topographic layout
drawings.
 Any excess depth excavated below the formation level exceeding tolerance of 300mm shall be
made good by backfilling with suitable material of similar characteristic of that removed and
compacted in accordance with specifications.
 The excavation method shall be open cut and shall be strictly machine cut. Also the gradient of
open cut slope shall be 90-degree maximum because of nature of soil.
 During excavation, we shall make drainage ditch slope to around the demarcated excavated
line pit as precaution in case rainfall to prevent surface run off into ditch.

8.0 DEWATERING SYSTEM

We shall install a sump pump and direct any seepage water in excavate areas to dry grounds to facilitate
excavation works in the event of uncontrolled surface run offs.
Wind rolls of 0.3m high shall be placed around excavated boundaries to surface runoffs and to control
hydrostatic pressures and to lower, control, remove, and dispose of ground water and permit excavation
and construction to proceed on dry, stable subgrades.

9.0 BACK FILLLING

Approved suitable material shall be used for backfilling. Compaction standard shall be employed in
the execution of this work according contract specification. Fill materials shall be distributed evenly
in layers and to the backfill area to a specified thickness of compaction = 150mm thick and compacted
by compactor to a specified compaction factor. We shall sprinkle water to the earth fill in compliance
with the allowable moisture contents specified before start compaction.

3
METHOD STATEMENT FOR EXCAVATION-EASTERN REGIONAL HOSPITAL-PHASE 1

10.0 TERMITE WORK

Material
Anti-Termite Control material shall be submitted by a separated document to the Construction
Manager for approval before application. A method statement shall be submitted by a separate
document to Construction Manager for approval before start of work.

11.0 QUALITY CONTROL

Compaction of Backfilling
After excavation, the bottom surface of pit shall be compacted to not less than 95% of maximum dry
density by vibratory plate compactor and the slope shall be trimmed off to avoid collapse of pit
wall. Field density test according to the Contract specifications for earthwork shall be adhered to to
achieve the maximum dry density of 95%. The fill material shall be checked and accepted by the
Engineer before carrying out the work.

SAFETY CONTROL
 Fundamental Policy
“Safety is the First Priority"

 Key Activities
Compliance with internal Implementation of Safety & Health Education
Prevention of Heavy Machinery Accidents

 Development and implementation of Activity

Implementation of Safety & Health Education

We shall note hazardous factors of each work activity and always reflect them at the daily safety
meetings. Point out them every day at the meetings in order to let individual worker to renovate
his safety consciousness.
 Prevention of Heavy Machinery Accidents

We shall be consistent with inspection at beginning of works (including working ground),

regular maintenance of machineries, designation of working area and provision of a proper
signalman.

 Others.
Safety signboards and barricades shall be installed around excavated area. Security guard
should observe all passengers around the site.
