Based on journal Predictors of Therapeutic Communication Between Nurses and
Hospitalized Patients (Robera et al, 2019). According to the World Health Organization (WHO)
report, communication serves an instrumental role that is at the heart of who we are as human
beings (WHO, 2010). However, the study revealed that 33.9% of the nurses had low level of
therapeutic communication, 31.30% of them had moderate level of therapeutic communication,
with another 34.90% had high level of therapeutic communication.
There are several things which are new or were not clear to my knowledge from the
article. For instance, it says that ineffective communication is reported as a significant factor in
medical errors and inadvertent patients harm (Devi and Victoria, 2013). I just realized that
ineffective communication give such a big impact to the patients. The other new things to my
knowledge are that 26% of the patients agreed that sex differences affected the therapeutic
communication and that 36% of admitted patients agreed that available time for care affects the
therapeutic communication. It is also interesting to find out that the main factors influencing the
therapeutic communication related to the patient, nurse, and the organization were disease-
related change, use of unfamiliar medical term, and ward’s condition, respectively. But, most of
all, it is challenging to know that educational status, language difference, education difference
and perceived patient view score were found as significant predictors of therapeutic
communication between nurses and admitted patients.
From other references we may also find further explanation, such as: the skills required in
therapeutic communication are delicate and far numerous than those required in general
interpersonal interaction, and mastering of therapeutic techniques helps the nurse understand the
patient better. It is obvious now to me that therapeutic communication is not just like mere
interpersonal communication skill. Another thing I found was that adequate moral attitude
towards personal profession is a necessary precondition for the effective exercise of therapeutic
communication. When a nurse has desirable moral and personal qualities that are needed to
serve one of the socially most responsible professions, realization of therapeutic communication
will not be a problem for the nurse, but will become a source of satisfaction in the performance
of professional activities. Moral attitude has actually played an important role in the therapeutic
communication. The last thing I have found was that the therapeutic communication can assist
nurse to achieve many goals like assess the patient’s awareness of the problem as it give details
of the patient’s thoughts and feelings about the situation and identify the most important client
concerns at the moment. To have effective therapeutic communication the nurse have to consider
rapport, trust, respect and also empathy. With all the above things put together into the
implementation of therapeutic communication, I can be very sure now, that therapeutic
communication would give significant contribution to the patients’ wellbeing when they are
hospitalized. Good reflection, always consider the communication is a part of quality care.
