ABSTRACT
The vastness of the Internet and the ease with which technology can be
accessed have resulted in an increase in demand for web-based teaching and learning.
Across the country, online education is rapidly infiltrating school districts and
universities. This paper discusses whether online courses may support high school
students study habits, as well as the possible challenges and disadvantages of online
coursework. This paper raises concerns about how to better help high school students
taking online classes.

Chapter I
THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE
1.1 Introduction
Academic achievement of students is an important component of the constellation
of variables influencing student learning. It also plays an important role in schooling,
mainly as a concrete instrument for assessing a student's learning experience.
Psychologists and researchers have attempted to comprehend how students vary in
processing, retaining, and retrieving learning information and have used various
personality, attitudinal, cognitive styles, and ability measures.
As the COVID-19 pandemic spread worldwide, many drastic changes were made
to fight against this worldwide enemy. One of the most affected sectors is our Education
system. Alternative techniques and innovations are introduced and almost immediately
needed to be implemented as the school year is already starting here in our country, the
Philippines. In actuality, we think the education sector of our country wasn't able to fully
evaluate the factors to consider in implementing our new education system that should
be able to provide education to a mass number of students, as it should be.
This new educational system is a limited privilege to Filipino students. Considering
our country is of a third world perspective in the world wide economy. Our privileges to
accommodate this new normal setting of school protocols are narrowly spread due to
poverty and other factors. These factors can affect not only the students but also the
people that surround them. That might be the parents as the needs of these students
are their responsibility. Teachers are also affected as they’re responsible to provide
1
practical knowledge to students in their journey to potential careers and life paths. Thus,
our team of researchers will be researching the inventory of study habits affecting
STEM students in new normal education of Iligan Medical Center College-Basic
Education district. Within this research we will be able to explain what these factors are,
why these factors need to be understood in an open-minded way and be noticed, and
the possible solutions to be given in order to solve the underlying issues that
accompany these factors.
In support of the preceding research, Ebele and Olofu (2017) discovered a
significant relationship between the variables in their work titled "Study Habit and Its
Impact on Secondary School Students' Academic Performance in Biology in the Federal
Capital Territory." This meant that students who developed good study habits were
more likely to do well in school and achieve academic achievement.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The researchers will focus to the Inventory of study habits of Stem students in
new normal education in Iligan Medical Center College-Basic Education.
Specifically, this study will seek to answer the following questions:
1. How do students cope with the sudden transition from traditional learning to
remote learning?
1
2. What are the challenges faced by the students in maintaining their study habits
on remote learning?
3. What are the changes that students discover in this new normal setting of
education?
1.3 Significance of the Study
The researchers will conduct this study to identify the Factors Affecting the
Study Habits of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic (STEM) students in
the New Normal Setting of Education in Iligan Medical Center College-Basic Education.
As you what you can observe the diagram above, the factors mentioned are
crucial to a STEM student’s academic performance. These factors can usually affect
student’s academic abilities negatively
The present study is believe to bring significant contributions to the following:
The teachers. Professionally trained teachers are recruited and appointed to
teach both Junior and Senior students to determine the student’s study habits and their
impacts on academic performance of the students, facilitating the students and
improving the teaching procedures.
The students. Students must also know if there study habits are desirable or
undesirable considering from the fact that good study habits can increase confidence,
competence, and self-esteem. Students must know that having good study habits can
improve the ability to learn and retain knowledge.
1
The parents. Parents must encourage their child in having a good study habits.
Encouraging parent engagement is more than common courtesy. It is one of the best
ways to create a positive learning environment for every student.
1.4 Scope and Limitation
This research will focus only on identifying the Factors Affecting the Study Habits
of Stem students in the New Normal Setting of Education. This study will be conducted
in the vicinity of Iligan Medical Center College's Basic Education Department, with
analysis of the data collected from selected Grade 11 STEM students. The researchers
will provide questions to support the research study.
1.5 Theoretical Framework
A Student’s mental health is definitely to be considered in order for their educational
productivity to be consistent in creativity and positive success. In Walberg’s theory of
educational productivity, it is stated that social-emotional influences are a very crucial
factor in a student’s educational growth. This theory is based on multiple reviews on
previous research about how a student’s mental health and learning environment can
affect their academic performances. (Walberg, 2004)
Walberg and associates (2004) demonstrated the importance of the domains of
motivational orientations, self-regulated learning strategies, and social/interpersonal
abilities in facilitating academic performance. In the study, it is also reported that
student’s who found confidence and self-awareness in their learning abilities, became
more motivated in setting educational goals and organized their learning strategies in
1
the SEL (social-emotional learning) programs are actually performing astoundingly in
their academics (Zins, Welberg’s associate, 2004) .
1.6 Conceptual Framework
This research is to device concrete information about how factors can affect the
study habits of STEM students of Iligan Medical Center College- Basic Education
Department.

Related Literature
A. Foreign Studies
According to the study conducted by Jafari et al. (2019), Relationship Between
Study Habits and Academic Achievement in Students of Medical Sciences in
Kermanshah-Iran, it suggests that study habits are the most important predictor of
1
academic performance and global research has revealed that study habits affect
academic performance.
Study habit has been expounded by many scholars, and given profound
explanation of it. In a study, “Effect of Poor Study Habits on Students’ Academic
Performance” (n.d.), it interprets study habit as a constant or consistent pattern of study
which individual has adopted over a long period of time. In relation to that definition, it
can also be discerned as a consistent, systematic and conscious tasks aimed at
acquiring specific knowledge items meant to achieve certain goals. The type of study
habits that an individual adopts will determine the study skills such would possess.
Thus, it is necessarily understood to say that study habits can be a desirable and
undesirable, or in other words good or poor. A good study habits include studying in a
quiet place, studying daily, turning off devices that interfere with study (such as TV and
mobile phones), taking notes of important content, having regular rests and breaks,
listening to soft music, studying based on own learning style, and prioritizing the difficult
contents. In contrary, a considered poor study habit includes procrastination, evading
the study, studying in inappropriate conditions, and loud sound of music and television
during studying.
Given the important role of study skills in a student’s academic achievement,
many prestigious universities such as York University in Canada and University of
Berkeley in California teach study skills to newly-enrolled students. In different studies,
study skills and habits and their relationship with students’ academic achievement have
been studied and different results have been reported. Also, various studies have
reported the study habits of students from weak to desirable levels. In this regard, a
1
study conducted on study habits of students in 21 medical universities in Iran showed
that 32% of the students suffered from a severe lack of study skills and habits. In many
studies, a positive and significant correlation has been found between students’ study
habits and their academic achievement. But in spite of that, no significant relationship
was found between these two variables.
In relation to that, as attested by the study in 2015 of Siahi and Maiyo, Study of
The Relationship Between Study Habits and Academic Achievement of Students: A
Case of Spicer Higher Secondary School, India, it says that everyone has different
study habits. Most of the time, students perform poorly in school simply because
they lack good study habits. In many cases, students do not know where to
begin. Those students in high school who succeed especially well usually study
alone and follow a study technique that has been worked out by them and that
incorporates desirable procedures. Good health, sufficient sleep, appropriate
exercise and nutritious diet are essential to achievement of good study results.
Study conditions that are unfavorable include inadequate lighting, extremes of
temperatures, humidity, poor posture, subnormal physical conditions and emotional
disturbance.
People behave, by and large, in characteristic ways because we have discovered
through experience that some responses are more effective than others. It means that
the academic achievements of the students having good and poor study habits differ
significantly and the students having good study habits achieve higher than the
students having poor study habits.
1
Very little is done about developing study habits in schools. Although it is the
students to know and to use good rules of study, the teachers need to be well
acquainted with the functioning of study rules in order that they may give guidance in
study practices. The degree of learning depends on the amount of time the child is
actively engaged in learning. The time spent on studying helps students to retain the
materials learnt, which will eventually boost the students‟ performance outcome during
tests or examinations. Their performance in licensure examinations was quite low.
Significant relationship between study habits and attitudes and performance in licensure
examination were clearly shown in this study. Further analysis revealed that study
habits (work methods and time management) of the participants were correlated with
their success in licensure examination while study attitudes (i.e. attitudes toward
teachers and educational acceptance) were not significantly related to success in
licensure examination. This connotes that students who had favorable study habits are
likely to pass the licensure examination.
A finding reveals that many students fail not because they lack ability but
because they do not have adequate study skills. Students who have difficulty in
frequently college do not have adequate study habits — highly significant relation
among various variables of study habits and academic performance. Successful
achievement in any form of activity is based upon study and that study should have a
purpose. It therefore depends on individual to decide why he or she wants to study,
either to gain new ideas or to find out relationship between two different things. What
one learns as a result of study depends on the degree at which one succeeds in
achieving that aim or purpose.
1
If academic failure is to be forestalled and standards improved, it is inescapable
that schools from elementary level should provide relevant values and stimulating
academic environments. Students should not be condemned but be encouraged and
linked to teachers with whom they can establish reflective intellectual companionship
that will help improve study habits.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the research design, the research environment, the
method of data gathering including the research participants and instrument the
method of analysis and the presentation of data analysis.
1
3.3 RESPONDENTS OF THE STUDY
The study involved the participation of senior high school students who are
enrolled at Iligan Medical Center College, specifically the Grade 11 STEM strand (which
composes of 30 students). These individuals will serve as the respondents to this study,
taking their judgement and perspectives into account, while conducting a classroom-to-
classroom awareness program how the factors affects the study habits of the 11 STEM
Online Learners.
3.4 METHOD OF DATA GATHERING
The first method for data gathering should be a questionnaire, in which
respondents are expected to answer questions that they have read or understand. Also
to express their opinions on our topic, which is about the “Inventory of study habits
affecting Stem students in the new normal education”, where they are always aware of
what is going on in our environment.
Second, we employ a conceptual framework that demonstrates the steps
involved in gathering information and data for our research affecting STEM students in
new normal setting of education on what comes on their minds, why is this happening in
students by their answers from the questionnaire and evaluating of collected data
results and lastly is finalizing it all.
3.5 RESEARCH INSTRUMENT
1
We used google docs to create the survey and distributed it through
messenger to our selected participants as part of our overall strategy to incorporate the
various components of our research.
3.6 METHOD OF DATA ANALYSIS
Respondents who give too detailed answers will be understood and will be
simplified by the researchers. On the other hand, if the respondents didn't understand
our questions, we'll make it simple for them to react quickly and share their thoughts.
The researchers can also use messaging to ensure that their responses are not direct
to you; you can write it entirely in your response.

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
This chapter wraps up the total outcome of the analyzed qualitative data that
undertook sequence of investigation and interpretation, thus resulting in conclusions,
drawn from the answers in response on the general and specific problems and
providing recommendations as an outgrowth of this study, based on the salient findings.
1
Summary of Findings
Based on the obtained and interpreted data gathered from the informants, the
researchers determined the coping mechanism of the students to the sudden transition
of learning from traditional to remote, the challenges they faced in maintaining their
study habits on remote learning, and the changes they discovered amidst new normal
education.
The challenges they encountered were the augmentation of their study
habits in the new environment of learning through practical reasons, self-improvements
by being more productive than before, and adapting to the new normal via improving
their time-management skills, the aggravation of their study habits caused by features
such as health-related factor, psychological factor, and technological issue, and the
distraction that greatly affected their study habits.
Conclusion
Based on the findings, the study revealed that students underwent through
challenging adaptation to the abrupt change of way of learning from tradition to remote
which affected their study habits from which it led them to improve their study habits to
cope with the change. The students encountered numerous conflicts in this remote
learning, along with their personal challenges. Regardless of these, the students of this
1
remote learning withstand the challenges they come across through several
adjustments that include scheduling and planning, having a break, and having their own
study process.
Recommendations
Based on the findings and conclusion, the following are recommended:
1. The students may adjust to this new educational system, considering the
current situation of the cases in our country and since that there is still no
official statement of asserting reimplementation of the face-to-face
class.
2. The students may practice proper approach towards the new educational
system taking it as advantage for their personal development as students
as they continue their academic journey.
3. This educational system may consider the inevitable impact of this system
to the health of the students, such as psychological, emotional, and
mental effect that exceedingly affect the study habits of the students along
with their academic performance, which could influence a positive change
towards them.
4. The parents may show unconditional support to their children for it can
also influence a positive change to them. The feeling of being appreciated
can help the students have a good performance in their class.
5. Inventory of proper study habits may be developed by school, home, and
peer groups to assist students’ academic performance.
1
6. The methods of teaching and the materials provided by school may be
enhanced for the benefits of the students.
