Partido State University: Brief History of Badminton

Badminton originated in England in the 1850s and became popular among the British military stationed in India. In the 1870s, British officers brought the game back to England where it grew in popularity. The rules were standardized in 1887 and the first international competition was held in England in 1899. The International Badminton Federation was founded in 1934 to oversee the sport. Badminton became an Olympic sport starting in the 1992 Barcelona Games. It remains a popular international sport played at the professional and amateur levels around the world.

1850- Badminton was created by British military


1870- Retired Officer brought the game to England and becomes very popular
1873- Duke of Beaufort introduced the game to his country
1874- Badminton club was stated in Folkslore
1887- J.H.E. Hart of the Bath Badminton Club standardized the rules
1899- The first badminton competition in the world held at England
1934- The International Badminton Federatio (IBF)was founded.
1948- IBF launche its first tournament
1972- Badminton became a demo sport at the Munich Olympics
1996- Mixed doubles was included in the Atlanta Olympic Games.
