Engineering Windmill Design

This document provides a report on a workshop to design an improved windmill. It summarizes the 5 steps of the engineering design process used: 1) Understanding the need to make an existing windmill lighter, able to follow wind direction, and have a rotating head. 2) Brainstorming design ideas including using recycled materials like zinc for blades and PVC for the rotating head. 3) Selecting a preliminary design and evaluating requirements, limitations, environmental impacts, and needed materials and tools. 4) Creating a prototype, testing it, and analyzing results to improve blade thickness and material reinforcement. 5) Discussing further improvements like ensuring durability, choosing attractive colors, and updating

Engineering Design Process

Step 1 .
Understand the need(1.Determine of a need/problem definition):
What is the problem?
 the blades are too heavy to function as a windmill
 the windmill does not work well because it does not follow the direction of the wind
 the head to the windmill does not move 360°
What do we want to accomplish?
 More performance needed
 For maximum wind speed consumption
 windmill head can follow the wind direction

What are the project requirements?

 expert in selecting materials
 need to have skills in choose windmill materials
 have knowledge how to connect all part
 expert in graphic design when creating a design that best suits the surrounding
conditions

What are the limitations?

 type of weather in the equatorial region
 high cost to set up

What is our goal?

 can increase the value of electrical energy obtained
 can reduce the rate of electricity consumption from existing power generators

Step 2
Brainstorm different designs(2.Conceptualisation):
Imagine and brainstorm ideas.
Be creative; build upon the wild and crazy ideas of others.
Investigate existing technologies and methods to use.
Explore, compare and analyze many possible solutions.
 Only use used items
 On the blade we chose zinc as the material because it is readily available and it has a
relatively low mass
 At the head part of the windmill I use pvc as the material so that it is easy to follow
the direction of wind movement and it can move 360°

Step 3
Select a design(3.Preliminary design and evaluation):
 Based on the needs identified, select the most promising idea.
 Plan: Draw a diagram of your idea.
 How will it work?
1. The wind will blow the blades of the windmill until the blades move
2. the windmill blades will rotate the shaft inside the nacelle
3. The shaft is connected to the gearbox, in the gearbox the rotation speed of the shaft is
increased by setting the ratio of gears in the gearbox
4. the gearbox is connected to the generator. generators convert mechanical energy into
electrical energy
5. from the electric energy generator to the transformer to increase the voltage and then
distributed to consumers

 What environmental and cultural considerations will you evaluate?

1. Its can be as an electric generator
2. when the process in the windmill takes place no greenhouse effect occurs
3. it is also an alternative source to fossil fuels

 What materials and tools are needed?

1. Zink(material)
2. High grade pvc(material)
3. 3 second glue(tool)
4. Zink cutter(tool)
5. Metal cutting pvc using grander machinr(tool)

 What analyses must you do?

1. Wind Energy Conversion System
2. Wind research
3. test the material that has been used at wind mild to estimate how long the material
durability

 What analyses must you do?

1. test the durability of the blades at various speeds
2. find the life expectancy of the material used to improve the product in terms of quality
in line with performance.

 How will you test it to make sure it works?

1. Try to use it in an open space and have a satisfactory breeze

Step 4 - Create(4.Detailed design and testing):

Assign team tasks.
Build a prototype and test it against your design objectives.
Push yourself for creativity,
imagination and excellence in design.
Does it work?
Analyze and talk about what works, what doesn't and what could be improved.
1. 1.The thickness and material of the blades need to be improved in order to provide
morepower and maintain the life expectancy of the product
2. The material on site should be reinforced so that it will not fail when the product is
easy to work hard
Step 5 - Improve(5.Production): Discuss how you
could improve your product. Make revisions. Draw
new designs. Iterate your design to make your product
the best it can be.
1. Make sure all parts have been tried to avoid
damage in the hands of the customer
2. Choose a color that suits the use of the
windmill to attract more attention
3. The best design updates and attract the
attention of buyers especially on the blades of
the windmill

1. Justify the design consideration.

a. Explain the economic and production factor.
 Because of its simplicity in price and does not pollute the environment

b. Identify the codes and standard used in design.

 We would like to know how differently the codes predict the lifetime and extreme
loads for some turbine components.
c. Explain the safety and product liability.
 Maintain the use of products without compromising green technology
 and this product will not affect any of the ecosystems that exist around it

d. Explain the environment and sustainability.

 The appropriate area is in a spacious place and which has a sufficient wind rate for it
to convert to electrical energy

e. Propose appropriate design consideration when designing product.

 The materials used are recycled materials and the materials obtained are the result of
processing recycled goods

2 Evaluate the ergonomic factors in design.

a. Define the ergonomic in relationship between human and machine.
 Ergonomics is the science of adapting products and processes to human
characteristics and capabilities in order to improve well-being and optimize
productivity

b. Explain the relationship of basic ergonomic between human and machine in the
display element.
 Facilitate human work as humans do not need to expend a lot of energy in doing a job

c. Evaluate ergonomic factors used on simple equipment, such as micrometer,

microscope etc.
 cordless machine, it makes it easier for users to drill holes in the workpiece by using
electricity and using less user energy

3 Evaluate factors in material selection for designing process.

a. List types of material.
 Pvc
 Zink
 Hot glue gun
 Mineral water
b. Describe the material properties.
 PVC, in full polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic resin made from the polymerization of
vinyl chlori
 Zinc is an elemental metal. It is listed on the Periodic Table as Zn

c. Evaluate factors in material selection to minimize environment impact.

 All material selections are recycled items used in order to support the green earth
movement that is environmentally friendly

Discussion Class Task

You are required to design a windmill and it can rotate at a low wind speed.
 change the material on the blade such as using carbon fiber either using a mold or
print from old design
 adjust the angle on the blade so that with a slow wind it can rotate
