SYLLABUS ON PCCH104 - BIOCHEMISTRY

Course Number : PCCH104 Course Descriptive Title : Biochemistry

No of Units : Lec: 3 Lab: 2 No of Hours per Week : Lec: 3 Lab: 6
Pre-requisites : PCCH102 Organic Chemistry
Course Description:
The course is designed to acquaint the students with the chemistry of the various biochemical systems, as well as the major metabolic pathways the bio molecules are involved in. An
understanding of these biochemical systems and chemical reactions will give a better appreciation of their roles in the maintenance of life and order in the body. The course also aims to relate
biochemistry with other basic medical sciences.
The experimental work is an integral part of the course, where the biochemical processes in the cell are observed and explained on the basis of their molecular structures and reactions.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify and describe the properties and chemical structure of biomolecules;
2. Describe the biochemical adaptations of these specialized fluids and tissues for the performance of their roles in the various processes of life;
3. Explain the chemistry of various body constituents ( blood and other specialized fluids; specialized tissues as bones, teeth, collagen, muscles, etc.);
4. Discuss the important mechanisms and pathways by which the different biomolecules operate as bases for the various processes of life.
5. Relate the concepts learned in understanding physiological disorders and diseases.
6. Appreciate the relation of Biochemistry to their course in understanding the true nature of diseases and its implication to health and well being.
7. Advocate appreciation and respect for human life as a result of the knowledge gained.
8. Demonstrate science-based skills and techniques in performing laboratory experiments, record and interpret results accurately and correctly;
9. Recognize the different pathological diseases arising from the disorder in the normal mechanism of the biochemical structures in the body.
10. Practice rational thinking and manifest self-respect, self-discipline, independence, honesty, and responsibility not only in further studies but also in any situation in life.
11. Apply/Use the knowledge, skills and attitudes developed during the course in coping with the different situations in life, particularly as students and generally, as members of the family
and the bigger community as well in the practice of their profession..
