Understanding Chaos and Complexity Theory

Chaos theory is a branch of mathematics that studies dynamical systems whose random states are actually governed by underlying patterns or laws. While systems may appear random or complicated, they are following simple rules. Chaos theory led to the realization that simple nonlinear equations can create complex dynamics and apparent randomness may conceal hidden order or patterns. Chaos theory has applications in fields like planetary motion and weather forecasting. Complexity theory emerged from chaos theory and its central theme is that large-scale simplicities can emerge from complex interactions among large numbers of components.

Thank you, Lyra, so the Chaos theory. What exactly is this?

For a textbook definition, the chaos theory is

a branch of mathematics that focuses on the study of dynamical systems whose apparent random states
are actually governed by underlying patterns or laws. In its way

Chaos teaches us that systems obeying simple rules can behave in surprisingly complicated ways

Our world is simple. Simplicity only tends to disappear when we look below the surface.

- The world really is simple, however, if we look closer and pay more attention to the smallest
details, we would realize how complex things really are

The discovery of the chaos theory led to the realisation that simple nonlinear equations can create very
complex dynamics, and that apparent randomness may conceal hidden order or like what ive said
earlier, underlying patterns. Therefore, these mathematical complexity that results in simple patterns
provides a better understanding of nature’s numbers

It is about finding the similarities between these seemingly random events in an equation.

Chaos theory has innumerable applications including the motion of the planets in the solar system and
weather forecasting

From the Chaos theory, a different kind of approach was advocated or adapted which is the Complexity
Theory.

Simplicity emerges from complexity or complex interactions

When we look closer behind the simplicities of the world, we would realize the complex, much
complicated explanation of an object.

Complexity Theory’s central theme is large scale simplicities emerge from the complex interactions of
large numbers and components

Theory of dynamical systems which is an area of mathematics utilized to describe the manner of the
complex dynamical systems, commonly by applying differential equations

From this theory, Ian Stewart shared to us three examples from the theory of dynamical systems that
showed how simplicity or simple patterns emerged from complex interactions. This was so that people
could see how the philosophy of the complexity theory can be seen all over science and how we could
appreciate the mathematical patterns involved in the simple things we see in the natural world.

COMPLEXITY Theory - simplicities emerge from complex interactions - case studies in this chapter shows
how simplicity or the knowledge of simple patterns emerged from complexity WHY ? ① The case
studies show a central theme of philosophy called the complexity theory , these studies are to prove
that it has appeared all over science without anyone promoting this concept ② The case studies each
have their own way in solving the puzzle about mathematical patterns in the natural world and in so
opens our eyes to the features of natures
