Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft
The Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft are the ideal types
of human associations found in communities. They
were developed by the German sociologist Ferdinand
Tönnies in his classic work Gemeinschaft und
Gesellschaft published in 1887.

Gemeinschaft
GEMEINSCHAFT OR COMMUNAL SOCIETY
refers to human associations that are characterized by
being intimate (having face-to-face relations), informal,
caring, homogenous, and group welfare-oriented.
Gesellschaft
GESELLSCHAFT OR ASSOCIATIONAL SOCIETY
pertains to human associations that are characterized
by being impersonal, formal, rational, heterogeneous,
and individualistically oriented.

Urban, Rural, Suburban, and Rurban
Communities
When a community is viewed as a shared political
territory and heritage, it can be classified into four
types:
URBAN
RURAL
SUBURBAN
AND RURBAN
URBAN
• There are lots of people living close together in a
small amount of space.

very much open space or natural areas.

• Buildings in rural communities are more spread out
than in urban ones.
• It is not unusual to find only a few buildings spread
out over large distances.

• Suburban communities are usually close to, but not
in, cities.
• There are fewer people than in urban communities,
but many more than in rural communities.
• Houses are often in neighborhoods and many people
have yards.

• Both have urban and rural characteristics
Local and Global Communities
• a term often used to denote a geographically
bounded community such as a territorial enclave,
village, barangay, town, city, municipality, province,
region, or even an entire country depending on the
point of reference: Global community, on the other
hand, is a term used to characterize the
interconnectivity of people or countries all over the
world.
Community Sectors Community
• refer to the subdivisions of society that represent clusters
of social institutions according to their social, economic,
and political functions. There are four types of
community sectors:

VOLUNTARY
AND FOR-BENEFIT
Social Space
• A social space is either a geographical or virtual
community where people gather or network with
one another due to common interests.
