Tutorial6 2020

This document contains 4 questions from a tutorial on dynamics for an introduction to biomechanics course at the University of Melbourne. The questions involve calculating acceleration, tension, reaction forces and angular acceleration for objects such as a crate being pulled by a cable, a cabinet rolling down an inclined plane, a thin rod on a horizontal plane subjected to forces, and a vertical rod with a cord attached being pulled. Formulas are provided for moment of inertia of rods rotating about their centers.

SEMESTER 1 – 2020

TUTORIAL 6 – DYNAMICS

Question 1
The motor winds in the cable with a constant acceleration (a = 1.3 m/s2). Determine the tension
developed in the cable as it pulls the 20-kg crate. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the crate
and the plane is µk = 0.3.

Question 2
If the 80-kg cabinet is allowed to roll down the inclined plane, determine the acceleration of the
cabinet and the normal reactions on the pair of rollers at A and B that have negligible mass.
Question 3
The uniform 60-kg thin rod is initially at rest on a smooth horizontal plane when the forces are
applied. Determine the acceleration of the bar’s center of mass and the angular acceleration of the
bar at this instant.
1
The moment of inertia of a rod of length L and mass m, rotating about its center, is 𝐼 = 12 𝑚𝐿2 .

Question 4
The 10-kg uniform rod is at rest in a vertical position when the cord attached to it at B is subjected to
a force of P = 50 N. Determine the rod’s initial angular acceleration and the reaction forces that pin A
exerts on the rod. Neglect the size of the smooth peg at C.
1
The moment of inertia of a rod of length L and mass m, rotating about its center, is 𝐼 = 12 𝑚𝐿2 .
