PG&E Variance Request Form

This document is a variance form for electric service requirements. It provides resources for PG&E's electric service guidelines and requirements for AC disconnect switches. It asks if a variance is required based on factors like connection type and disconnect switch placement. If a line side tap is needed, additional requirements and photos must be provided. A to-do list outlines attachments required like diagrams, photos, and signage plans to complete the variance request.

Resources

PG&E’s Greenbook for Electric & Gas Service Requirements is available at www.pge.com/greenbook

AC Disconnect Requirements: See section titled “Requirements for AC Disconnect Switches.” Sub-
panels, breakers, or integrated disconnects do not meet the
Greenbook definition of an AC Disconnect.

Line Side Tap: A connection after the PG&E meter and before the main breaker, in the customer
section (highlighted in blue). Connection cannot be made in the PGE sealed section.

Variance Appendix (separate attachment)

A. Is a Variance Required?

Check all that apply:
☐ The system is connected to a circuit breaker after the main breaker (i.e. there is no line side / supply side tap)
☐ An AC Disconnect is optional according to the Greenbook (see Resources section above)
Note: If both statements above are checked, a Variance is not required and you do not need to complete remaining
sections of this form.
☐ More than one required AC Disconnect is installed (list all AC Disconnects on the Application)
☐ One or more required AC Disconnects are installed greater than 10 feet from the main service panel
☐ One or more required AC Disconnects are not on the PG&E approved list and I will provide a manufacturer spec sheet
☐ Connection is a line side tap (if unchecked, proceed to Section C. Otherwise, continue to Section B)
B. Line Side Tap Checklist

If there will be a line side tap:
a. Attach picture that clearly shows:
☐ Whole Meter Panel
☐ Customer section with panel open
☐ Connection points identified by circles
☐ Wire routing identified by arrows
b. Verify that all 3 statements below are true for the project:
☐ FUSIBLE AC Disconnect within 10 ft line of sight of main service panel
☐ No wires, conductors, or other equipment will be routed through or installed in the PG&E sealed section (i.e.
pull section and/or metering CT section)
☐ Line side tap will be in the customer section only
c. Temporary shutdown (select one):
☐ Yes, a temporary shutdown has already been done, and the site is ready for a field inspection.
• I understand that a temp shutdown for any future projects with line side taps should be requested
from PG&E after the Variance is approved.
☐ No, a temporary shutdown has not been completed and will be requested after Variance is approved.

C. To-Do List

1. Attach a copy of the Custom Single-Line Diagram (SLD)
2. For line side taps: Attach color photo identified in Section B
3. For required AC Disconnect:
• For AC Disconnect over 10 ft – submit draft Site Map placard to be installed at main service panel
• For multiple required AC Disconnects - submit draft site map placard(s). See Variance Appendix for example.
4. If applicable:
• Attach manufacturer spec sheet for any unlisted equipment that you are proposing to install
