POLYURETHANE
Polyurethane, in its many forms, has become an essential part of modern day life. This versatile product provides a
variety of flexible coating on structural steelwork and concretes floors as well as its familiar used in coatings and
paints. It is used in sealant, in flexible jointing compounds, in adhesives, resins and castings.
For all these applications where a top quality, high-integrity barrier against weathering and other
contaminants is required, or where absolutely bubble free cast resins are required for superior strength
and electrical insulation properties, then it is essential that Zeotec Molecular Sieve is specified as part of
the formulation.
Polyurethane is formed by the reaction of an isocyanate with a polyol. The addition reaction is a simple
rearrangement of the active groups, without any co-product.
The presence of water in the system has serious effect on the way the reaction proceeds. The -OH group
in water promotes cross linking of the active isocyanate groups and results in the formations of the carbon
dioxide by an elimination reaction
The desired reaction is
R1 – NCO + R2 – OH R1 – NHCOO – R2
The presence of water causes
2(R1 – NCO) + H2O R1 – NHCONH – R1 + CO2
Hence one molecules of water can remove two isocyanate groups. Carbon dioxide is released as a gas
into the mixture and this can cause uncontrolled foaming of the polymer. Furthermore the rate of this
reaction is much faster than that of the desired reaction.
The problems that this reaction can cause depend on how the polyurethane is being used at the time.
Indeed this reaction is used as the basis of curing in some applications.
Another particular problem may be residual moisture present on the surface of the substrate. Zeotec
Molecular Sieve is effective in removing this moisture as it enters the system thus checking the formation
of fish eyes and bubbles on the surface of the polymer.
Polyurethane Foam
Polyol is a macro molecules of polyhydric alcohols with molecular weights ranging from 200 – 700 with
functionalities ranging from 2 to 8. the polyol when reacts with isocyanate , which cntains an NCO radical
reacts with the OH part of the polyol in the presence of suitable catalysts to form a urethane linkage ( -
NC). The catalysts accelerate the reaction to the required level, the blowing agents blow the cells
increases its volume to form the light weight polyurethane foam. The surfactants promote and stabilizes
the polyurethane cells and helps to retain the shape into which it has been blown to. Blowing agents are
produces in situ as well as externally added into the reaction mixture.
Polyol + Isocyanate + Catalysts + Surfactants + Blowing Agents Polyurethane Foam
All of these problems can be minimized or avoided by incorporating Zeotec Molecular Sieves
Powder products into formulations.
