INTRODUCTION
As you move on in your journey of personal development, you will be able to study the challenges that happen
to teenager like you in module 3. But now at the end of this lesson you will find out the answer to the questions:
 How will you handle the changes happening in you as you enter adolescence?
 How your thoughts and actions are affecting your life? What will be the best thing to do with these
changes?
You will find all of that as we dug in and discovering yourself much deeper and develop you holistically.

Activity 1: Let’s Practice

Mnemonics. As we all know you have just entered the age of being adolescence. This activity helps you to
define what adolescence means with giving one word for each of its letter.

There must be a lot of words to describe adolescence; some may be fun, but some may also means
responsibility. Puberty is the onset of adolescent for girls 10- 11 years old, for boys 11 -12 years of age. Adolescent
may also means teenager with ages that start from 13 to 19 years old.

Physical and psychological, as well as emotional changes take place inevitably. These ages a lot are
striving to be the best they can be, striving to establish their personalities however instantaneously and frustratingly.
More so, rejection is the primary issue during this stage. Peer Pressure is evident during adolescent it means they
are easily being influenced by their peers.

Now let us deepen your understanding of what adolescent means by learning about the different changes
that you are experiencing. Try this second activity.

Activity 2: Let’s Practice

This initial activity will help you to recall and identify changes that you experience during adolescence and
the mechanisms that you used to deal to deal with such changes. Below, cite your physical changes when you were
13?

You started to feel and experience various body changes when you were around 13 years old. This is just
normal for all of us. This is what we called developing of our secondary characteristics, boys and girls have
different but some common changes that you will experience. This is some of the secondary characteristics that
boys and girls may manifest.

Boys and Girls experience rapid changes development because of the hormonal changes takes place in the
body. These hormones are responsible for the changes for both male and female. It is also responsible for the
maturation of cells in the body that is involved in reproduction.

As more physical changes take place among adolescent, their concerns about physical appearance may
also increase. Acne outbreaks are common during teenage years, most especially in girls. And with that, few
adolescents experience satisfaction with their bodies. This maybe because physical attractiveness is one of the major
concerns of
teenager as their social experiences underline it important. As
such many adolescent do various these to prove to themselves
that they are attractive which may put their safety, health and
even their life goals at risks. Many of the adolescent is self-
conscious maybe some is responsible and try things to cope
with but many as well if it not handled very well may lead
them to have low self-esteem and lack of self-confidence.

On the other hand, you need to remember that it is


understandable to get affected by these body changes. To be
able to cope with during this stage you need to make
adjustment on how you view the things that are happening
inside and outside your body. At the end of the day, it is just
maintaining your proper hygiene. It is only through SELF
ACCEPTANCE that you become brave enough to face the
“whole you”.

Activity 3: Let’s Practice

10. Personal & proper hygiene gives you more attractive and self-confidence.

COGNITIVE CHANGES AND IMPLICATIONS

explore and experiment. Moreover the lack of clear plans or fast changing decision prod a teenager to engage in
risky behaviors like cutting classes, into drugs, computer addictions and many more.
As such you are encouraged to pause and study the situation before making any decisions. It will be
helpful to consult a trusted adult such as your parents, your teachers, or your guidance counselor regarding your
situations.

PSYCHOLOGICAL CHANGES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS

As transition period adolescent has often describe as a period of “storm & stress”. Teenager like you
experience emotional ups and downs. You are easily get exited (like seeing your crush passing through the
corridor), you also tend to easily gets irritated (when your mom ask you to stop playing with your phones).
Emotional maturity should be achieved by the end of adolescence. One indicator that you have finally
attained emotional maturity is when you know how to express your emotions in a socially acceptable manner.
“Life’s lessons are learned from difficult experiences and you gain important like skills from each obstacle
conquered.” These realizations are important in your journey toward self- actualization.

Activity 4: Let’s Practice

Make a reflection to the following questions:


1. How do you satisfy your need for belongingness?

2. In what ways your friends influence you?

To successfully make social adjustments, you need to enhance your social skills. Doing so will let you be
comfortable in social settings, carry yourself gracefully in front of others. And enjoy the company of your peers.
To cope well with social pressures, however, you should also learn to clarify your boundaries so that you maintain
self-reliance.
MORAL/SPIRITUAL CHANGES AND THEIR IMPLICATIONS

Moral development starts with obeying your elders when you were a child to more internal, moral
thinking during adolescence. According to Kohlberg, adolescents should have attained post conventional
reasoning or have developed moral reasoning based on universal rights of humans. Adolescents who deviate
from their own general principles and act upon the wishes of others even though these are wrong are more
likely to suffer from self-condemnation (Hurlock 1992).

Moral codes which you will use as bases in judging what are right and what is wrong. These codes include your
own personal and social code that will guide you to control your behaviors accordingly. Your values as well as
your religious and spiritual views affect your commitment to this set of codes.
