Drug Study - Midazolam

Midazolam was administered orally to a client prior to a procedure. Midazolam works by enhancing the effects of GABA in the brain to produce sedation, anxiolysis, hypnosis, and amnesia. Common side effects include decreased respiratory rate, hypotension, and paradoxical CNS reactions. The client's anxiety decreased after administration and he fell asleep 15 minutes later. Nursing responsibilities include checking the order, monitoring vital signs and sedation level, and educating the client not to take midazolam with grapefruit juice.
