Nursing Admission Requirement – Admission Process
University Acceptance
To be eligible to apply to the Nursing Department, students must be officially accepted as a
National University student. To do so, students must be provisionally accepted into an interim
Non-Degree Seeking program and send all official transcripts and documentation to the Office of
the Registrar.
Students including LVNs seeking to study nursing at National University must:
A. Meet all requirements for admission to an undergraduate degree program at the University as outlined in
the University Catalog,
B. Have obtained a 2.75 cumulative GPA in the General Education and prerequisite courses, (Courses must
have been taken at a regionally accredited institution.)
C. Have earned a grade of “C” or higher in all prerequisite courses,
D. Have a clear criminal background check and drug screen,
E. Submit a separate application for admission into a specific nursing program, *Note: Meeting the
minimum requirements, as listed above, does not guarantee admission into a nursing program.
Once the Office of the Registrar receives all official transcripts and other documents required for
admission, student records are evaluated for transferability of credit.
Students allowed 3 attempts into National University Nursing program, this includes all
campuses – SAN DIEGO, FRESNO, LOS ANGELES.
Complete Prerequisites
Once a student has been evaluated by the Office of the Registrar, an Academic Advisement Report is
available in the SOAR Student Portal. This report lists all transferred coursework and can be used to
determine if an applicant has completed the Nursing prerequisites. Prerequisite classes must be
completed with a C grade or above.
(Please note that C- grades will not be accepted for prerequisite classes.)

Pre-Nursing Forum
Students interested in enrolling in a Nursing program must first attend a Pre-Nursing Forum. The
forum will introduce you to the Nursing Department, detail the application process, and provide a

Students applying to any of the NU Nursing Programs in California can apply by logging on to
their SOAR Student Portal (for complete instructions, please see Knowledge Base Article:
Completing the Nursing Online Application).
From the SOAR Menu, click on the Nursing department link (left-hand side)
Select Nursing Application
Follow instructions as given
Once an application has been submitted and processed, the Nursing Department will contact
eligible applicants to schedule an interview date. Students will receive an interview date via e-mail
(1) week after the application deadline. Interview dates will be scheduled (4) weeks after the
application deadline.
Nursing Pre-requisites/Co-Requisites
All pre-requisites must be completed with a "C" grade or better before you turn in your application.
If a class is still in session it will not be accepted. Overall GPA is 2.75; if you have earned your
bachelor's degree and your cumulative GPA is not a 2.75, GPA must be a 3.0 for the last 60 semester
or 90 quarter units you've completed.

Evaluating Nursing Applicants
Nursing Admissions Score Breakdown:
Science and Math based GPA 40% Used to qualify for an interview

Interview Score 20% Only Top Candidates will be
selected for interview (see below)

The following numbers of candidates will be selected for an interview based on the highest
compilation of Science and Math based GPA and TEAS Scores:
• Rancho Bernardo Campus: 90 Total Students
o 80 BSN Candidates per Cohort
o 10 LVN Candidates per Cohort
• Los Angeles and Fresno Campus: 45 Total Students
o 35 Candidates per Cohort
o 10 Candidates per Cohort
After the interviews occur, the following numbers of candidates will be offered acceptance into the
program. These students will be selected based on a compilation of all three above scores (Science
and Math GPA, TEAS Score, and Interview Score)
Maximum allotted students:
• Rancho Bernardo 40 Max, 5 Alternates
• Los Angeles 19 and Fresno 20 Max, 5 Alternates
*Please note that alternates are not guaranteed a spot in current or subsequent cohorts. If alternates are not
selected, they will need to reapply to a subsequent cohort.

Math and Science-based GPA - 40%
Applicants are awarded points for their official grades in each core prerequisite course (see list
below). For information on calculating GPA, please refer to the University policy.

TEAS Score - 40%
TEAS Version VI is only accepted. The Test of Essential Academic Skills contains multiple-choice
questions on Reading, Math, Science, and the use of the English language. Students are only
allowed to submit up to a maximum of three (3) TEAS exams.
Submitting of TEAS scores:
TEAS results must be submitted PRIOR TO APPLICATION DEADLINE. Results must be
submitted officially from ATI Website to “National U CA San Diego”. PDF or emails
directly from the student will not be accepted.
NOTE: National University is no longer proctoring the TEAS test. TEAS tests must be taken
with an outside agency moving forward. Students are welcome to submit previous TEAS
test results taken at National University as long as the results are TEAS Version VI.
Interview Score - 20% (Proctored Essays will not be used moving forward from July 2019)
The interview will be held on-site at the campus which the student applies. This 20-minute interview
will involve questions surrounding the student’s motivation for becoming a nurse and academic
preparedness to start the program. The interview will be conducted and scored by two Nursing
Faculty.
