Second Century
Getting Inspired for Field Day
ARRL Field Day 2021 is upon us, and it's a great opportunity to experiment with
facets of amateur radio you may have never tried before. And the great thing about
Field Day, beyond the diversity of ways to operate, is the diversity of the skill levels
of the participants! This is a fun event for everyone involved, so why not jump into
something new and give ita try, whether it's VHF, satellite, FT8, or using the National
Traffic System to send your Section Manager a message about your operation.
‘One of my favorite Field Day outings was in 1989. A
‘group of my friends — who are all well-known con-
{esters today — and | set out for Skyline Drive in New
Jersey for a mini-mountaintop experience. We had a
‘couple of medium-sized tents, a generator, and a
bucket truck with a tband Yagi pointed west, along with
‘a dual-band dipole from atop a very tll fire tower. The
two things that strike me about that Field Day are: if we
‘were to do that outing today, we were certainly socially
distanced enough to operate safely, and also that this
was the first — and only — operation using FreddyPac.
This was a 2-meter-based packet robot that | wrote,
running on @ Compaq “lunchbox” computer. Freddy sat
and monitored 2 meters white making the occasional
‘contact. Field Day had become my venue for experi-
mentation!
As I look at Field Day this year, | would encourage you
to take on an aspect of amateur radio youve never tried
before. YouTube being what itis, there's a tremendous
‘amount of material to research.
You can start with going into the field! Structured events
like the various on-air programs that focus on everything
{rom parks to summits to islands can give you very
‘900d ideas about making your first venture outdoors.
‘These operators use one of many new-generation QRP
radios and small light antennas for their activations, The
maker community has even created 8D-printed handles
{or antennas to be wound around for portabiity and con-
venience. This year, ARRL is offering a kit for Field Day:
‘an end-fed half-wave antenna. This kit is intended to
take the guesswork out of collecting the materials, but
{gives you the opportunity to build your own antenna for
Field Day.
Perhaps you'd like to experiment by building a Moxon
antenna. This simple antenna is a favorite amongst
another community you can learn from: the VHF rovers.
‘The 6-meter Moxon is a small but fantastic performing
antenna for Field Day. You can also look at a 2-meter
Moxon along with a short 70-centimeter Yagi on the.
‘same boom for satelite operation. Although some of the
recent rock stars of low earth orbiting (LEO) satellites
are now silent, there will be plenty of passes during
Field Day for you to try making a contact.
Field Day is also a great opportunily to reach out to
newcomers or friends who have been off the air for a
while. The event brings out a sense of community for
clubs, groups, and friends to get together and operate,
‘This issue includes a Field Day insert that we hope
helps you navigate the myriad ways to add bonus
ppoints to your score. You'l find that a newcomer can
‘operate a GOTA station for your effort, and perhaps
your inactive friend may find the pace of a VHF bonus
station more appealing,
Last year, Feld Day was directly impacted by very
strict restrictions that states imposed to keep people
far enough apart to prevent increased potential of
spreading COVID-19. This year, the restrictions in many
places have been reduced or even eliminated. Mary
‘groups and clubs are revisiting their options for coming
together for Field Day in a socially responsible way.
‘Whether you decide to operate from home again this
year, take a trip toa local park, experiment with some
‘thing completely new, or operate safely with your club
‘or group, Field Day is the best opportunity of the year
{or all of us to come together and enjoy the hobby!
‘Stay radio active, be that connector getting more people
‘on the air, and we'll see you for Field Day!

Gene Clark, We
Gene Clark, W4AYK, of Albany,
Georgia was first beguiled by radio in
the early 1940s, when he saw the
movie Men of Boys Town, in which
Mickey Rooney's character, Whitey
Marsh, was a ham,
College, medical school, and mar-
riage intervened soon after, but Gene
‘did manage to edge toward the radio
hobby by building a Heathkit A7E
amplifier in the mid-1950s. By the time
‘Gene was a Navy tight surgeon sta-
tioned in Pensacola, Florida, ne also
had a Heathkit OX1008 transmitter
and, as of 1958, a Conditional license
— both of which had been as-yet
unused. That all changed wien he got
{0 Pensacola.
“I moved in and | saw a 40-meter
antenna next door’ Gene recalled.
“That was Maurice Wheeler, KARMO,
Maurice turned out to be one of the
bbest Elmers you could ever find”
Getting to Work
‘Gene upgraded to Advanced, then
Extra, enjoying the bands until the
mid-1970s, when he first moved to
Georgia and set up a solo practice as
‘a nephrologist.
“There was no dialysis clinic, no
ephrologist anywhere in all of south
Georgia,’ Gene said. “I came in
‘and got a nonprofit help me start
ialysis service. It started off like an
explosion!”
Another long break from radio
‘ensued, thanks to Gene's thriving
practice. In 1997, nearing retrement,
he decided to take a fow steps back
from work, and a few steps toward
ham radio again, He had always main-
{tained his license and his ARRL mem:
bership because, as he said, "I knew
‘one day I'd be back”
Coming Full Circle
Gene got back on HF, checking in on
nets like the Alabama ARES net
(Gene describes himself as having
“Alabama roots,’ particularly in Bir-
mingham, where he went to college
‘and medical school) and the Southem
‘Country Cousins net, the latter of
‘which brought him full crc.
“1 checked back in and what hap-
pened? | heard K4RMO;’ Gene said.
He and Maurice reconnected, and
their friendship lasted until Maurioe
died 3 years ago.
A Passion for
Serving Others
Gene's retum to ham radio also
‘marked the beginning of his involve
ment with ARES in the Georgia Sec-
tion, He's worn many hats, inclucing
District Emergency Coordinator and
Section Emergency Coordinator.
Gene was Georgia Section Manager
{rom October 2009 to November
2016, and sill serves as Assistant
Section Manager at the state level, as
well as being Emergency Coordinator
for Dougherty County, Georgia.
‘The Dougherty County ARES group
has been very successful in partnering
with the major hospital in the area,
Phoebe Putney Memorial, partly
because Gene saw patients there for
years. This familarty and credibility
led to the group being able to establish
station KKALLY on the ninth floor of
the hospital. The station has a D-STAR
repeater, and is equipped for NBEMS.
and Winlink as well as FM and HF.
KKALLV is used for regular and
emergency communications with other
hospitals in the Georgia Hospital Asso-
ciation, and participates in all the
Georgia Hospital Drills.
Gene has a special interest in digital
‘communications, which has led him to
arrange in-person and virtual work
shops, as well as regular cigital practice
‘on the local nets and inthe wookly
Georgia Section Drs. He prides him-
seff on being ahead of the curve
regarding the recent pandemic-driven
pivot to cniine meetings — for more
than a decade, he's been using the
GoTaMecting videoconferancing plat
form for many Section-wide meetings.
‘Appast president of the Albany
(Georgia) Amateur Radio Ciub, Gene
has organized and (along with his
follow club members) participated in
emergency dis with the local Marine
Corps Logistics Base, and has pro-
vided communications for local mara
thons and other events — all at nearly
92 years of age.
When asked what keeps him involved
in ham radio, Gene instantly sad, “its
people. They're good people to get to
know. Paricpation in these events pro-
Vides a vital service tothe community,
as wel as allowing club members to
hone our emergency communications
skis”

in configurations designed to satisfy requirements at
every level. Our antennas mechanically adjust utilizing
stepper motors, so that the antenna is the exact physical

Fixed length aluminum antenna manufacturers use
traps, interlacing or simply add more elements to “trick”
the radio into thinking it is resonant - but there is no
substitute for having a resonant, optimized antenna

‘a modest DXCC total. A few years.
‘ago, | started setting my WAS and
DXCC counters back to zero each
year on January 1. This challenges
me to make WAS and DXCC by the
‘end of the year. After a few months,
usually accomplish each of my
‘goals. For the rest of the year, |
break down my totals by mode and
band. This gives me a lot of chal-
lenges — WAS and DXCC on each
of the HF bands, by each mode

tal modes could be further broken

A Resurgence
‘of Ham Radio
Inthe 34 years I've been a ham,
I've never seen such a surge of
interest in people earning their
licenses the way | have during the
COVID-19 pandemic. Even I'm
more active than | was before. Ive
seen an increase in longer contacts
in particular.
Ive met so many new hams and
enjoy being able to help them. va
even scheduled times and frequen-
cies to help them practice Morse
code and get comfortable on the air
with CW. It feels so good to be able
to help this hobby grow. | commend
‘ARRL forall the work they're doing
to help keep ham radio alive,
including their work with spectrum
defense (see www.arrl.org!
spectrum-defense-fund for more
information). | appreciate their
handling of license renewals and
organizing great on-air events.
|'m gratetul for the ham radio
hobby, as it’s helped me deal with
the effects of isolation due to the
pandemic.

prospective award counts. This
mode can become addictive and
you can easily find yourself working
itfor hours at a time,
‘There's a certain challenge to run-
ning this mode. I's fun to reduce
your pawer to 20 or 30 W and try
making long-distance contacts,
‘while dodging the obstacles of
operators making CQ DX calls. 1
also enjoy finding a 40-meter band
opening and making a~15 dB
contact.
You can also try plugging a con-

see the photographic views. The
