ROCKSLEDGER CRUSHER
CRUSHER TERMINOLOGY
Within this manual various terms will be used when describing the crusher and its operation. To avoid
confusion and misunderstanding, a variety of terms are listed and described below.
FEED = This is the raw material to be crushed.
FEED OPENING = This is the opening where the feed material enters the crusher. When measuring
the feed opening or “gap depth,” it must be measured from the valley between the teeth of the swing
jaw to the peak of the tooth of the fixed jaw in a straight line perpendicular to the centre line of the
crushing cavity.
Depending upon the type of crusher and the type of material to be crushed, the maximum feed size
should be around 80% of the feed opening. This is to be used as a general rule. The opening is
measured with maximum setting, half-worn jaws and when the jaw stock is in its open position.
CAPACITY = This is the crusher output in tonnes per hour.
PRODUCT SIZE = This is the maximum size of the crushed material delivered by the crusher.
CRUSHING CAVITY = This is the internal contour formed by the two crushing jaws and the cheek
plates.
JAWS = These are the crushing members. They consist of two types – a swing jaw and a fixed jaw.
The swing jaw is located and on the jaw stock, and the fixed jaw is located on the crusher body.
CLOSED SIDE SETTING = This is the shortest distance between the bottom of the fixed and swing
jaw as measured where the jaws are at their closest relationship during their working cycle. The
setting must be measured in a straight line from the centre line of the crushing cavity.
NOTE: On this series of machine the jaw will always stop in the open position. Any setting must
account for the stroke to produce a closed side setting.
STROKE = This is the difference between the maximum and minimum distances at the bottom of the
fixed and swing jaws during one revolution of the eccentric shaft.
The stroke must be measured in a straight line at the centre line of the crushing cavity.
NIP ANGLE = This is the angle between the fixed and swing jaws.
