year between finishing high school and starting university studies.


Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for students who decide
to do this.
In several nations, youngsters are emboldened to take a year off, to work, or travel
across the world, before enrolling in their institution of higher education. Whereas this
trend offers a few advantages, there are also some disadvantages worth considering.

On the one hand, one of the biggest pros of taking a sabbatical to explore the world is
that it gives the young an opportunity to broadening their mind and improving skills.
Such trips are not only recreational, but also provide them a chance to socialize,
engage in volunteering, and learn about global culture. As a result, this helps the
youth gain more experience and understanding about the world which will be a great
advancement when entering university. For instance, data from Harvard University,
2010, pointed out that the well-performing rate from university courses is around 30
percent less in those children who chose the course after taking a “gap year” in
comparison to those who headed straight to university after high school. Additionally,
it is a fact that most of the young have a problem when choosing their career.
However, thanks to their exposure to real life, young people may know what to study
for their further education, which matches their interests as well as personalities.

On the one hand, the decrease in knowledge may be a consequence of long intervals
in school time. It is undeniable that the more time young people spend on traveling or
working, the less chance they have to revise lessons. Accordingly, they may lose their
basic foundation of subjects. In some cases, they may also lose interest in studying.
Due to the lack of study time, some students may not remember their lessons even
though they might have been good students before. Hence, when coming back to
school, they may be left behind, and therefore have no motivation to keep on
studying.

In conclusion, this essay weighed that taking a break to travel or work in between high
school and university can be beneficial for personal and professional development., it
can delay academic progress by one year. Both the positives and negatives need to be
considered before making a decision.
