was there on the island, Ralph didn’t show a simple interest in his idea but after
thinking about it carefully he agreed with him and had a meeting.

Ans: Ralph believes that his father would come to find him as he will find that he
isn’t there and all of them would be rescued.

Ans: Piggy overheard the pilot talking about the plane catching fire and about the
attack they had before.
7.) How does Ralph attract the other boys on the island? What does he do?

from their country will come to rescue them. To tell everyone about the news he
got he blew the conch shell and gathered a meeting which attracted the littluns.

Ans: The younger boys were well-behaved; they were lining up when they got

toward the assembled group. List at least three attributes.
Ans: They looked wearily and intimidating but united at the same time. They were
wearing the same black garments. They represent savagery, discipline
and aggression.
10.) How does Jack treat the others?
Ans: Jack saw himself as the leader of the choir group so he ordered everyone
around him to do as he said whether they liked it or not. He also treated everyone
in a disrespectful way.
11.) What conflict soon arises? How is it solved?
Ans: the first conflict that arises for the boys is that they needed someone who can
guide them to survive on the island. Only jack and Ralph were the beguns present
there so they had to choose between them, after some discussion they decided to do
voting and they made Ralph the leader and that’s how they overcome the conflict.
12.) How does Ralph do to make Jack feel better? What is compromised?
As Ralph was elected as a leader, Jack didn’t appreciated their choice cause he
thought that he was the only capable person on the island and he didn’t liked it and
he felt humiliated. So, to maintain the harmony between the groups, Ralph decided
to make Jack the leader of his hunter team.
13.) What is the purpose of the expedition of Jack, Ralph, and Simon?
The purpose of the expedition is to explore the land to see whether it really was an
island.

Simon described the unusual buds on the bushes as candles as many buds folded
up against the light looking like a candle.
15. Why hadn’t Jack been able to kill the pig?
Jack hadn’t been able been to kill the pig because the knife was descending and
cutting into living flesh and the unbearable blood flowing out of the wound; he
hesitated because this was his first time killing an animal and he was probably
nervous.

Chapter 2
1. What rule concerning the conch is made?
The one holding the conch gets to talk, the others are not allowed to interrupt,
except Ralph.
2. What does Piggy attempt to call the group’s attention to?
Piggy was trying to say that they were stuck on that island and it might take a
while for rescue to come as no one knows that they were there.
3. How does the talk of the “beasties” affect the boys?
The talk of the “beasties” mostly concerned and frightened the littluns whereas the
older boys were looking more on the logical side, believing that “beasties” do not
exist.
4. at this time, Ralph says the boys appear to have two goals. What are they?
The two goals were to get rescued by igniting a fire to get the attention of ships
passing by the island and the second was to have fun at the same time.
5. How does the group react to Ralph’s suggestion that they build a fire? How
does Piggy describe their actions?
Most of the boys agree on building a fire but they acted like what piggy describe as
“like a crowd of kids”.
6. How does Piggy treat a small boy? What does that tell us about Piggy?
Piggy treated the boys with patience and tolerance; he has empathy and a sense of
compassion so he treated the smaller boys with more grace compared to the other
boys. Piggy’s personality reflected kindness and a softness in his character, a
characteristic that is often mocked by adolescent boys; you can say that he is the
mature one in the story.
7. How do they manage to start the fire?
They manage to start the fire by using Piggy’s glasses to centre heat from the sun’s
rays.
8. What responsibilities has Jack taken on for the choir?
As the massive fire quickly died down, Jack and his choir group were supposed to
take the responsibility to keep the fire going.
9. What goes wrong? Do you see any symbolism here? What is going on in the
adult world at the time?
Piggy was furious about the boys not following the orders properly; he argued that
they should first make the shelters rather than just running off to hunt a fire.
Meanwhile, the massive bonfire has caused 1/3 of the island to burn up. It
symbolizes chaos just like the world they were in at that time. At the same time in
the adult world, war is still going on.
10. Who is missing?
The boy with a mulberry-colored birthmark on one side of his face who initiated
the fear of the snakes on the island was missing.

Chapter 3

1. What is Jack preoccupied with?

Jack was preoccupied with hunting pigs.
2. What complaints does Ralph have? What has he noticed about people?
Ralph complained that the boys were not doing their job and they were off
swimming in the beach and playing all-day.
3. How are the littluns?
During day-time, the littluns did not do much work and the littluns were still
terrified because of the “beasties”, they would talk and scream in the night.
4. Explain the love-hate relationship between Jack and Ralph.
Ralph and Jack both have dominant personality, both of them wanted to be the
leader and give out orders. But they both have different goals; Jack preferred to
hunt for pigs whereas Ralph preferred to build shelter and focused on getting
rescued from the island.
5. Where has Simon gone and what does he do there?
Simon went into the jungle to catch his breath from all the chaos and to look for
peace; he spent his time alone in his secret place in the jungle. While he was in the
jungle, he picked some fruit for himself and helped out the littluns too as they
were not tall enough to reach the fruit on their own.
6. What might Simon represent?
Simon represents peace, goodness, and kindness; he symbolized the Christ figure
in his goodness. We find that he was a very gentle-hearted, supportive and kind
boy; he helped the littluns to pick fruits, he helped Ralph to build the shelter when
no one did, and he helped Piggy to find his glasses.

Chapter 4

1. What strange things happen at mid-day?

The strange thing was a mirage; it occurred during mid-day.
2. How did the littluns spend their day?
The littluns spent their day picking and eating fruits where they could reach and
not particular about the ripeness and quality causing stomach-aches but they got
used to it. They were still terrified of the “beasties”, during night time, they
huddled together for comfort. Apart from that, they played by the beach most of
the time and enjoyed the entertainment of assemblies.
3. In what ways does Roger seem cruel?
Roger started throwing rocks at Henry. Although he made sure not to hit Henry, he
just enjoyed throwing rocks near Henry. This has clearly showed us that Roger was
a sociopath as the idea of hurting or killing Henry makes him excited.
4. What is Henry doing while Roger watches him?
Henry was playing with aquatic creatures as Roger watched him.
5. What does it mean when Roger felt the "taboo of the old life?" Also, what
does it mean when Jack approached Roger "a darker shadow crept beneath
Roger's skin" What effect is Jack having on Roger?
When Roger said that he felt “the taboo of the old life”, it indicated that they had
been spending too much time alone without rules restricting them and their
civilized personality was starting to fall apart. They were slowly heading towards
savagery as civilization started to collapse. Roger felt “a darker shadow crept
beneath his skin” when Jack appeared, Roger saw the dark side in Jack’s
personality and behavior. From my point of view, I think the author was trying to
tell us that Jack is the culprit and every problem started due to his arrogance and
desire to kill and dominate.
6. Describe the transformation that takes place after Jack paints his face. The
mask serves a few purposes. List them.
Jack painted his face with red and white clay and charcoal, it allowed the boys to
hunt for pigs as they needed something to camouflage them self so that the pigs
won’t see them coming. The mask brought out the darker side of Jack, he turned
himself into a savage; he got excited, danced around and his laugh became a
bloodthirsty snarling. He was a whole new person as the mask hides his shame
and self-consciousness; the mask act as a protection for Jack to hide from his guilt
of behaving like a savage.
7. What does Ralph discover that upsets him greatly?
Ralph was upset about the fire going out as Jack and his choir boys promised to
keep the fire going. The wipeout fire has resulted in a ship passing by and not
seeing them and their chance of getting rescued was gone which upseted Ralph
greatly.
8. What do the hunters chant?
The hunters were chanting “Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Bash her in”.
9. How does Jack’s attack on Piggy and the breaking of one the lenses in his
spectacles symbolize the degeneration of the group?
As Ralph scolded Jack for leaving the fire which made them lose the chance of
being rescued, Jack was humiliated and he lashed out at Piggy causing his glasses
to break. The spectacles symbolize the degeneration of the group as one side of the
lens represents civilization and peace whereas the shattered side represents
savagery and breakdown between the groups.
10. Who find Piggy’s glasses for him?
Simon found Piggy’s glasses for him.

Chapter 5

1. What is Ralph realizing is necessary in order to be a leader?

Ralph realized that in order to be a leader he had to be able to make wise decisions,
the ability to consider the overall situation and to take most of the problem into
account; to be smart and intelligent like Piggy.
2. What rules have been ignored? List at least three.
Ralph gave a speech mostly about the boys not obeying orders and doing their jobs
properly. The boys had been drinking water directly from the river, there was
nothing wrong drinking from the river but they promised to bring fresh water back
to the camp and Ralph felt that there should be water kept in the camp too. At first,
they all built the shelters together but slowly they got bored and left, leaving only
Ralph and Simon to continue the job in building the shelters. There are only three
shelters left and it might fall apart anytime if the rain came and people were not
building more shelters or maintaining the shelter. So, Ralph asked them to continue
to build more shelters. In addition, the boys seem to use every place as a lavatory,
even near the shelters and Ralph thought this was dirty and ordered them not to
release themselves when they were picking fruits. Ralph insisted they use the rocks
right along beyond the bathing pool as a lavatory as the tide cleans the place up.
3. What does it mean when Ralph refers to the littluns as “taken short?”What
does that mean? What does this show about their behavior?
The littluns are taken short means that they have unexpected diarrhea from eating
too much fruit and they use any place as a lavatory because of the urgency of the
matter. But it also shows us that the boys were slowly turning in to savages
abandoning their social norms of civilization.
4. What rules does Ralph make regarding fires?
The rules are that the fire should remain on the mountain instead of any other
places on the island in case they burn down the whole island and they should keep
the fire going so that rescue ships see them.
5. A littluns says he sees something moving in the jungle at night. Who/what is
it?
It was actually Simon but it frightens the littluns (Phil) as he thought it was the
“beast”.
6. How does Jack explain the beast away?
At first, Jack explained that there was no beast on the island, only pigs but he then
later said that if there was a beast, he and his hunters will hunt it down and kill it.
Jack was trying to weaken Ralph’s leadership and gain more power for him as the
boys are frightened of the beast. Instead of trying to explain logic into them, Jack
played along with it.
7. Why are rules important to Ralph? The answer is something Ralph says?
As Ralph said “Because rules are the only thing we've got.”, rules are important to
Ralph to keep them together to maintain order; civilized and order, it is what
brought them together as a working society avoid becoming savages and animals.
8. What does Simon mean when he says, "What I mean is… maybe it's only
us…"? What do you think "Mankind's essential illness" is?
Simon saw how everything fall apart; from the fire to this meeting. I think that
Simon was trying to say that maybe the only beast is themselves as they slowly fall
into savagery. I think that “Mankind’s essential illness” the falling of civilization
on the island as they started to reject Ralph’s leadership and orders.
9. Why doesn’t Ralph blow the conch when the meeting dissolves into chaos?
Ralph had acknowledged the fact that they are falling apart and no one will listen
to him as his authority has been taken away by Jack so he did not blow the conch
even if Piggy insisted he should do so.
10. At the end of the chapter what does Ralph wish for?
Ralph wished to receive a sign or message from the adult world.
