Sputum Collection Guidelines for AFB

This document provides instructions for collecting a sputum sample to test for tuberculosis (TB). The best time to collect sputum is in the morning upon waking, as the TB bacteria will be more concentrated. The sample must be kept out of direct sunlight at all times, as sunlight can kill the TB bacteria and alter the test results. Proper collection involves washing hands, identifying the patient, having them cough deeply into a collection bottle, and analyzing the results within 24 hours to detect the presence of mycobacteria.
