Other Characteristics:: Name of Rock: Granite Type of Rock: Igneous

Granite is an igneous rock composed mainly of quartz, feldspar and mica. It forms deep within the Earth's crust from the slow cooling of magma. Granite has high hardness and compressive strength making it suitable for use in countertops, flooring, and construction. Its variable coloration comes from different mineral compositions, and it is resistant to heat, scratches and stains when sealed properly.

Name of Rock: Granite

Type of Rock: Igneous

Physical Properties Of Granite:

Colour: Pink, Black , White & Variations of Grey

Streak: White

Lustre: Vitreous

Diaphaneity: Opaque

Chemical Composition: SiO2, K2O,Na2O , CaO , Al2O3

Other Characteristics: Granite is comprised of a many different minerals that give each
slab a unique and attractive appearance. For example, granite high in feldspar will have
rich red or pink highlights. Mica produces brown or black veining while quartz gives
pink, white or black hues to the stone.
Because of its durability, it's great for heavily used areas in the home, such as kitchen
countertops. Granite is resistant to scratches and damage from heat such as pans or
hot hair tools. It is also stain resistant and easy to clean when sealed correctly.

Mechanical Properties of Granite:-

Cleavage: No Cleavage

Effective Porosity(%): 0.2-4%

● Moh's Hardness: 6-6.5

Specific Gravity: 2.6-2.7

Young's Modulus(Gpa): 40Gpa

Distinguishing Feature: Specific Gravity , High hardness , Low Porosity

Crystal Form: Hexagonal & Monoclinic

Compressive strength(Mpa): Above 200Mpa

● Origin of Granite Deposits: An old, and largely discounted process, granitization states that
granite is formed in place through extreme metasomatism by fluids bringing in elements, e.g.
potassium, and removing others, e.g. calcium, to transform a metamorphic rock into a granite.
● A-type granites were defined as to  occur in anorogenic setting, have alkaline and anhydrous
compositions. They show a peculiar mineralogy and geochemistry, with particularly high silicon
and potassium at the expense of calcium and magnesium.
● The production of granite at crustal depths requires high heat flow, which cannot be provided by
heat production elements in the crust.
● Chemical weathering of granite occurs when dilute carbonic acid, and other acids present in rain
and soil waters, alter feldspar in a process called hydrolysis.

Uses of Granite:

❖ Granite is used in buildings, bridges, paving, monuments, and many other exterior projects.
❖ Granite is a prestige material, used in projects to produce impressions of elegance and
quality.
❖ Indoors, polished granite slabs and tiles are used in countertops, tile floors, stair treads and
many other design elements.
