Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION

Individuals react differently to alcohol, and some attributes that may cause variations in alcohol reaction are gender, age, and social environment. Alcohol
abuse can be severe especially for the elderly due to decreased physical activities. Alcoholism affects every aspect of individual including their mental and
physical health, leading to serious complications such as brain damage, liver, and heart. Some of the psychological effects of alcoholism include depression and
confusion, confusion and even loss of interest. With the presence of alcohol addiction, people become financially unstable, and this trend is highly probable of
increasing the poverty rate. Even the relationship with people that they live in and their community, alcohol has also been known to play a big role in aggression,
domestic and street violence and making people behave irresponsibly.
Alcohol use and abuse among older people is an increasingly important area to understand. In many western societies the proportion of older people has
increased profoundly and will continue to increase in the future. Alcohol beverages have been part of social life for the millennials, yet societies found it difficult to
comprehend and cease the phenomenon. A central theme of this book is that to better understand alcohol consumption and its consequences, better
understanding of social and cultural influences of women must be done since studies have shown that older women maybe specially at risk for alcohol problems.
Moreover, they are more likely than men to outlive their spouses and face other loses that may lead to loneliness and depression, physiologically. They are also
at greater risk for alcohol related health problems as they age. Ultimately, alcohol use recommendations for older women generally are lower than those set for
both older men and younger women.
When alcohol is used moderately it can have positive effects that can make one person healthier and livelier. Furthermore, it can even ease tension and
makes one relax. According to some research, moderate consumption of alcohol and protect an individual from acquiring cardiovascular diseases, which can
also create a positive outcome with the people they are dealing with.

Background

To further enunciate the issues of alcoholism, alcohol use is widespread in the Netherlands, with as much as 88% of the adult population who consumes
alcohol in the past year (EU citizens attitudes toward alcohol 2010). Alcoholism contributes 4.5% to the total burden of disease in the Netherlands (Ooyen Van
MMJ [Link] 2009), as it increases risk of alcohol abuse and dependency. When use excessively, alcohol contributes to numerous comorbidities such as cancer,
cardiovascular disease, and liver cirrhosis, as alcoholism has been related to injuries especially in traffic accidents (WHO 2009).
This study aims to present a detailed assessment of alcohol consumption in the aging women of Sandiat Centro, San Manuel, Isabela, based on data
collected between 2009 and above. Moreover, data to be presented will be focusing on alcohol consumption in older aged women as well as associations
between alcohol use and demographic lifestyle/traits.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to determine the effects of alcohol consumption on the health of aging women. Specifically, this seeks to answer the following questions:
1) What is the profile of the respondents in terms of:
1.1 Gender?
1.2 Income?
2) What are the drinking habits of the respondents in terms of:
2.1 Type of liquor?
2.2 Number of bottles consumed (per month)?
2.3 Frequency of drinking alcohol?
2.4 Reasons for drinking alcohol?

Therefore, the researchers aim to seek whether there is a higher percentage of alcoholic elderly women in the barangay. Moreover, they also aim to associate
the said phenomenon on the following variables: Age, gender, income, and lifestyle.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to describe the impacts of alcohol consumption on the health of aging people in Sandiat Centro, San Manuel, Isabela and to
spread awareness to people who are addicted to alcohol especially older women. Moreover, the capstone project is appropriate since this will not only be
detecting the number of women who are alcoholic, but also the manifestations and conditions that may be correlated with their addiction.
Rationale

The researchers aim to explore on the residents of Sandiat Centro, San Manuel, Isabela, specifically the population of aged women with regards to the
intake of alcohol. Conducting the said study in barangay Sandiat Centro to evaluate the prevalence of alcoholism in aged women and to spread awareness
of how alcohol can influence one’s lifestyle especially in older women. One study by Liu [Link]. (2019) established an association between alcohol and
frequent alcohol consumption with higher incidence of dementia in older Japanese individuals, yet the study did not further evaluate if there was a significant
difference between the said trend based on a certain gender. Moreover, Kim and Kim (2008) also studied the alcoholism rate of women in Korea, in addition
to the traditions and current trends in Korean women’s alcoholic drinking. They also established the associated factors concerning alcoholic women, yet they
only focused on Korea and generally women as the age of the population were not specific unlike the current study to be conducted by the researchers. For
the methodology of the study, the researchers will be formulating a self-made questionnaire for the survey. Then, they will be performing a pilot or field
testing which will assess the quality of the survey questionnaire. Furthermore, it also tests whether the survey will be answerable by the target audience by
accepting critiques and evaluation from the participants.
