Hand Infection

Hand infections can cause disability if not treated promptly. Antibiotics within 24-48 hours are usually enough to treat minor infections. Risk factors include diabetes, immunosuppression, and bites. Common organisms are Staphylococcus aureus. Deeper infections may require surgical drainage in addition to antibiotics. Chronic or recurrent infections may have fungal or atypical bacterial causes. Serious infections like acute tenosynovitis or osteomyelitis sometimes require emergency surgical treatment.
