Wurth Electronics Midcom is your source for flyback transformers. Learn about flyback
transformers and popular flyback transformer parts from Wurth Electronics Midcom.
What Are Flyback Transformers?
A flyback transformer is simply a storage coupled inductor that can store energy and provide
coupling and isolation for the flyback converter. The primary winding of the transformer is directly
connected to the input voltage source storing energy in the transformer. A gap between the core
helps to store the energy. When the primary winding is disconnected from the source, the energy
is transferred to the secondary winding, thus supplying the load.
The flyback is the simplest and most commonly used topology in switch mode power supply for
small power supply applications. The biggest advantage of switch mode power supply is higher
efficiency because of low power losses. Also, the part size is smaller, has a lighter weight due to
higher operating frequency (typically 50 kHz – 1 MHz), and features lower heat generation due to
higher efficiency.
Popular Flyback Transformers from Wurth Electronics Midcom
If you’re looking for flyback transformers, look no further than Wurth Electronics Midcom. Our
expertise is in discontinuous mode flybacks, continuous mode flybacks, and boundary mode
flybacks. We carry a variety of these flyback products to suit all your various applications.
Here are a few of our favorite Wurth Electronics Midcom flyback parts.
LowProfile Flyback EFD20 Series for Offline Applications
Recognizing a need for a lowprofile solution that both offers great power capabilities and
meets offline safety agency requirements, Wurth Electronics Midcom introduced the
EFD20 series of flyback transformers.
Designed for offline discontinuous mode flyback transformers, the EFD20 series provides
power up to 24W, with an entire range of output voltages available from 5V to 48V.
Because these flybacks are able to operate without saturating to frequencies as low as
68kHz, they make managing EMI much easier.

MIDMHC Offline Transformers for
Metering Applications
Another excellent series for offline
applications is our MIDMHC Offline
Transformers for Metering Applications.
MIDMHC parts support creepage and
clearance distances up to 14mm, multiple
isolated outputs, and power over 15W — all
while reducing footprint by 30 to 60%
compared to the existing solution.
Designed specifically for smart metering applications, our MIDMHC flybacks feature an
innovative combination of core and bobbin design that employs a modified EPcore on a
raised bobbin. This improves noise performance relative to Ecore designs.
The MIDMHC series includes universal input offline transformers with one to three outputs
of 3.3 to 24V to demonstrate the capabilities of the package. If you have unique needs,
Wurth Electronics Midcom will design custom flyback transformers based on the MIDMHC
package for you.

Flyback Transformers for LT3799,
LT37991 and LT3798
For those working with Linear Technology’s
LT3799, LT37991, and LT3798 Isolated No
OptoCoupler Flyback Controllers with
Active PFC designs, we have a perfect
series of flyback transformers.
Using different modes of flyback operation,
these transformers cater to power levels
ranging from 4W to 100W+. They utilize a special winding technique to product a very low
leakage inductance (less than 1%), which maximizes the power factor and efficiency of the
Linear Technology drivers. Along with complying with various safety standards and
satisfying reinforced insulation requirements, these flyback designs achieve high dielectric
withstanding requirements (up to 4.5KVac).
