Correction Due To Temperature

The document describes a formula for correcting measurements of distance taken with a steel tape for temperature differences from the standard temperature. The formula takes the measured distance, adds or subtracts a correction based on the tape's coefficient of thermal expansion and the difference between the observed and standard temperatures. An example problem applies the formula to find the temperature during a measurement where the corrected distance was 318.103m, with a standard length at 20°C and coefficient of 0.0000116/°C.

A.

Correction due to Temperature (to be added or subtracted)

C t=α ( T o−T s ) L

where,

α = coefficient of thermal expansion (0.0000116/℃)

To = observed temperature during measurement
Ts = standard temperature
L = nominal length of tape or total measured
distance

Example: The measured distance from B to C was 318 m. The steel tape used has a standard length at
20℃ with a coefficient of thermal expansion of 0.0000116/℃. The corrected distance B to C is 318.103
m. Find the temperature during measurement. (Answer: 47.92℃)

Calculator technique: shift CALC =

318.103=318+ 0.0000116( x−20)( 318)

x=47.92
