BMW R 1200 GS Wheel Bearing Guide

36 31 851 Renewing front wheel bearing (wheel removed)

Preparatory work
Removing left and right shaft sealing rings

Core activity
(-) Removing wheel bearings

Place support ring (No. 31 4 800) between the wheel hub on the right
side of the wheel and reaction support (No. 00 8 572).
Heat the bearing seat.

Technical data
Release 100 °C
temperature, front
wheel bearing

Use reaction support (No. 00 8 572) and internal puller(No. 00 8 573) to


remove the wheel bearing.
Remove the spacing bushing.

Heat the left bearing seat.

Drive out the left wheel bearing with drift (No. 11 6 732) from the inside.
Allow the wheel hub to cool down.
Degrease and clean the bearing seats and the spacing bushing.

(-) Installing left wheel bearing

Introduce wheel bearing (1) into the bearing seat.


Install spindle with pull-in nut (No. 36 5 551), washer without thread (No.
36 5 554) and washers with thread (No. 36 5 553):
Washer (A) dia. 52 mm
Washer (B) with thread dia. 25 mm
Washer (C) with thread dia. 52 mm
Pull in wheel bearing (1) until seated.
Remove washer (A) and pull-in nut.

(-) Installing right wheel bearing

Install spacing bushing (2).


Spacing bushing (2) sits flat and square on wheel bearing (1).
Introduce wheel bearing (3) into the bearing seat.
Install washer (A) and pull-in nut.
Pull in wheel bearing (3) until seated against spacing bushing (2).
