APPARATUS AND CHEMICALS
Tap Density tester, Drug sample, graduated cylinder, spatula.
THEORY
1) Bulk density : The mass of a powder divided by the bulk volume. The
bulk density of a powder depends primarily on particle size, distribution,
particle shape and the tendency of the particle to adhere to one another.
2) True density : It is the density of the material itself exclusion of the voids
1
and intra- particle pores larger than the molecular or atomic dimension in
the crystal lattice.
3) Carr’s Consolidation Index: It is the indication of the compressibility of
the powder. It is named after the scientist Reph I Carr Jr. It is frequently
used in the pharmaceutical as an indication of the flow ability of powder.
%compressibility = PtP−P
t

where, Pt = T apdensity
Po = Bulkdensity.
Carr’s consolidation index
Percentage Compressibility Flowability
5-15 Excellent
12-16 Good
18-21 Fair
23-35 Poor
33-38 very poor
less than 40 very very poor
PROCEDURE
a) Bulk Density : 1) Pre-seived 40 mesh drug was poured in graduated
cylinder via a large funnel.
2) The weight and volume of drug was measured.
3) The bulk density was determined by using the given formula.
Bulkmass
Bulkdensity = BulkV olume
B) For Tapped Density : 1) The measuring cylinder was placed in mechanical
tapper.
2) It was tapped 100 times.
3) Again volume was noted using the given formula:
T apdensitymass
T appedDensity = T apvolume

0.1 Calculations
A) For Bulk density
Mass of Drug (gm) Volume(ml) Bulk Density Bulk Density ±standarddeviation
70 100 0.7 0.7 ±0.02
60 90 0.67 0.67 ±0.02
70 100 0.7 0.7 ±0.02
- Mean=0.69 -
B) For Tapped density
Mass of Drug (gm) Volume(ml) Tapped Density Tapped Density ±Standarddeviation
70 70 1 1 ±0.075
60 65 0.92 0.92 ±0.075
70 65 1.067 1.06 ±0.075
- - Mean= 0.99 -
Result
1)BulkDensity = 0.69 ± 0.02
2)T appeddensity = 0.99 ± 0.075
0.1.1 Carr’s Consolidation Index
T appedDensity−BulkDensity
= T appedDensity
= 0.99-0.69 0.99×100
= 30.3 %
Therefore CCI = 30.3 %
