[Link] do you think it’s important to present yourself as a professional in an interview?
(Distinction)
Professionalism includes practicing basic etiquette and following the norms of
acceptable workplace behavior. The way you dress, enter the interview room, shake
hands, smile and introduce yourself to the hiring manager are all elements of
professionalism. Presenting a professional approach to your interview can affect the way
you are perceived.
First Impression
One of the main reasons professionalism is important for job candidates is that the first
impression the hiring manager has of you affects the interview. If you dress professionally
and present yourself well, he is more likely to see you as competent and capable of doing
the job. Some interviewers may rule you out automatically if you arrive late, have visible
tattoos or fail to show basic workplace etiquette during your initial encounter.
Convey Self-Confidence
Walking with good posture, greeting people with a friendly smile, saying thank you to the
hiring manager and other basic traits of professionalism demonstrates confidence.
Someone who acts professionally typically believes he has a right to be at the interview
and deserves the job. When you are prepared and professional in your attitude and actions,
you also feel more comfortable during the interview. When you don't stress over
professional faux pas, you can more easily focus on answering questions naturally and
comfortably.
Show Respect
One of the easiest ways to get on the bad side of an interviewer is to disrespect him with
unprofessional behavior. Arriving late suggests you didn't think the interview was
important enough for you to plan ahead and arrive early. Bringing your backpack in or
chewing gum shows a lack of respect to the hiring manager and the organization.
Professionalism shouldn't just begin with the hiring manager. You should act
professionally from the moment you arrive, including the way you treat the receptionist.
