INTRODUCTION:

Our perspective of community sometimes is anchored on how we see the world, in our
reality. But is our reality about community is the only one that exists? Not! This topic
will help you see the beauty of each community from different perspectives.

OBJECTIVES:

1. Define community-based on the perspectives of social sciences, institutional, civil


society, and local and grassroots levels.
2. Cite examples of communities and based on each perspective and reflect on it.
3. Determine the goals of communities in each perspective.

ACTIVITY 1:

Imagine the people in the community where you reside. Recall some dialogues you have
had with other members of your community as well as interactions between its members
which you observed. Write the dialogue in the comic box below.

Note: Institutional Perspective views the concept of community in three dimensions.


 1st, It is an existing establishment or physical space where members of the
community go for a certain purpose.
 2nd, it is the institutional community as a social model. This defined by networks
and institutions where community groups are formed (schools, churches, companies,
etc.).
 3rd, the community is composed of the way people act, interact with each other,
react, and expect each other to act and interact.

SUMMARY/KEYPOINTS:

From the Social Science Perspective, community is defined as a group of people in a


particular area interacting with each other. The relationships in a society are considered necessary
for effective community functions.

From the institutional perspective, communities are organized as institutions such as


organizations for religious, social, or similar purposes. It was explained in three dimensions: the
physical space, the social model and roles or statuses.

From the civil society perspective, community is linked by common interests and collective
activity. Its objective is to serve other people. Examples include people’s organizations, civic
organizations, and social movements.

From the Local and Grassroots Perspective, self-organization is initiated to encourage local
citizens to contribute to the community. This perspective emphasizes volunteerism.
