Diazotization Titration
I) Definition of Diazotization Titration
Diazotization titrations are those titrations used to estimate the amount of simple primary
aromatic amino compounds by using 0.1M sodium nitrite as titrant.
II) Principle of Diazotization Titration:
Compounds containing primary aromatic amino group undergo diazotization titration. In
which amino group diazotized into diazonium salt by reacting with nitrous acid, which is
liberated from sodium nitrite in presence of, concentrated hydrochloric acid.
Hcl + NaNo2 HNO2 + Nacl
Nitrous acid is unstable in nature and it cannot be used as titrant and So sodium nitrite is
used as titrant.
Condition of titration:
The temperature of titrating mixture is maintained at 5-10 oC to prevent decomposition of
nitrous acid.
End Point Detection:
End point of this titration can be detected by using starch Iodide paper as external
indicator. When slight excess of free nitrous acid present on the starch iodide paper react with
potassium iodide and iodine is liberated, which gives immediate blue colour.
