Activity 2
Manual Handling is an important WHS procedure which aims to protect employees from the risk of
musculoskeletal injuries such as soft tissue injuries, sprains, repetitive strain injuries, joint injuries and back
and neck injuries as a result of incorrect procedures when lifting, carrying, pulling and pushing.
For this task you are required to monitor manual handling techniques used by two team members. Before you
begin this task you should seek their permission to observe them in the workplace.
Use the observation checklist to record the lifting technique of educators. Do not identify the educator by
name
When observing try to be unobtrusive. Tick or cross to indicate if you observed the correct lifting techniques.
The comments section can be used to note any ideas for corrective action.
After completing your observation document on your findings and recommend corrective action or training
needs.
Document your assessment on the ‘Monitoring Correct Lifting Techniques’ template.

HLTWHS003 Maintain workplace health and safety: Workplace Tasks
Activity 1
To complete this task refer to Chapter 3 of your textbook ‘The Big Picture’ and Chapter 7 of ‘The Business of
Child Care’.
This task requires you to contribute to and evaluate a practice drill of an emergency evacuation or lockdown of
the service. In conjunction with your workplace supervisor choose any relevant type of emergency situation for
the procedure e.g. fire, snake, chemical hazard etc.
The evacuation or lockdown procedure must be conducted in accordance with the Emergency Policy and
Procedures of the service. You should read the policy and discuss the procedures with your workplace
supervisor so that you are clear about your role and responsibilities. Your supervisor will explain your role and
responsibility as a lead person in managing the evacuation/lockdown.
Each member of the team will have already been assigned a specific role in the evacuation/lockdown
procedure – you should familiarise yourself with each person’s role before the evacuation/lockdown rehearsal.
You should also familiarise yourself with all exits and assembly points that will be used for the evacuation
/lockdown procedure.
You will need to talk to your workplace supervisor to arrange a suitable time for the evacuation/lockdown to
take place.
Once the practice drill has been completed, document the details of the emergency and conduct an evaluation
of the procedure and outcomes:
What worked well?
Were there any problems/issues?
What leadership skills did you draw on to manage the evacuation?
Comment on the communication strategies used between team members.
What did you learn about the challenges of conducting an emergency evacuation?
Your report should be signed off by your workplace supervisor before it is submitted for assessment.
Document your assessment on the ‘Emergency Evacuation/Lockdown Record’ template.
