Quick Start Guide - Frontline Cloud

The document provides step-by-step instructions for starting vulnerability scanning within 20 minutes by creating an account, adding a scanner, setting up scanner profiles with IP addresses to scan, creating a scan, and troubleshooting common issues. Key steps include downloading a virtual scanner appliance, activating it with a token, adding internal and external IP ranges to scan profiles, running an initial scan on a small number of IPs, and viewing results once complete.

Quick Start Guide: How to Start Scanning in Under 20 Minutes

1. Create an account at https://www.digitaldefense.com/try

2. Click on the email and activate your account!
3. When you login for the first time, you will see a Getting Started Checklist. To the right there is a “Get
Help” button with very technically detailed instructions. If you are familiar with vulnerability scanning,
feel free to use the Get Help instructions and follow from there. If you aren’t as familiar, here is what
we are going to accomplish:
a. Add a Scanner
b. Set up Scanner Profiles with IP’s To Scan
i. Internal IP’s (25 IP’s max)
ii. External IP’s (5 IP’s max)
c. Create Your Scan

Add a Scanner
1. Click on Add a Scanner on the main Dashboard page.
2. Click on “Appliance Tokens”
3. To the right, you will see a column titled “Virtual Scanners Download. From there you can select
the image that matches your virtual platform.
4. Download and deploy the image to your platform. This will take varied amounts of time, I’ve seen
10 minutes to download and deploy, or it could be an hour and a half.
5. After you have deployed your appliance in your network, click the New Token button under Active
Tokens and take that token and input it into the appliance.
6. After that appliance has been activated, you can click on the Scanners tab (or if you have lost your
place, System -> Scanner Management) and you should see a green dot next to the new scanner.
The name should have “Int” in the name.

Set Up Scanner Profiles

1. Click on System -> Scanner Management if you aren’t already there.
2. You should see two scanners listed, both with green dots. One for internal, one for external.
3. Click on Scanner Profiles
4. Click on Internal Scanner Profile
5. Click on IPs and Ports
6. Click on Add Rules
7. Under ‘IP addresses’ input your individual IP’s you want to scan, separated by a comma, or a range.
For example: 10.1.1.15, 10.1.1.18, 10.1.1.35 or 10.1.1.15 – 10.1.1.20.
You CAN specify a subnet here, but not when it’s time to do the scan. (10.1.1.0/24)
8. Go back to the External Scanner Profile and repeat for that profile as well.
Create Your Scan
1. At the top of the page on the right you will see a bright blue button that says “+ New”
2. Click that button, then choose Scan.
3. From there you can either leave the “Start Scan on” time as it is and it will run immediately, or if you
want to schedule in the future, you can specify a specific time.
4. Feel free to change any options you care to, but in this mode we want to leave Scan Policy as Default,
Scan Speed as Normal, and Add To Active View On.
5. I advise against building reports just yet. That can be done later.
6. Under Scan Targets, choose Ad Hoc IPs & Ports and put in the IPs you want to scan, again, separated by
a comma, or via a range.
Do NOT specify a range of over 5 IP’s if you are scanning External, or over 25 IP’s if you are scanning
Internal. This will cause the scan to FAIL.
7. After you have specified the IP’s, your Available Scanner Profile should be auto selected, and you can
click Add Rule. You should have a green check mark with the IP’s you’ve specified.
8. Click Create and Run at the top right of the page, and you are on your way!

From there, you can click on Scan Activity and see your scan running, as well as when it’s complete. After it’s
complete it will take a few minutes for the results to populate into your Active View. Click Active View when
you are done and go look at your results!

Troubleshooting/FAQ’s:

1. I can’t get my RNA (virtual scanner) to install.

Are you sure you downloaded the right one for your platform?
If you are unsure download the first one. OVA (which stands for Open Virtual Appliance) is the
standard for most virtual platforms and should work for you. It may not have all of the customization if
you were to do Hyper-V, but it will work just fine.
2. I can’t activate my scanner, the code doesn’t seem to be working!
First, try another activation code. If those don’t work, please check to make sure that your server can
reach back out to the internet to our servers (in AWS) to activate. This will also be important to be able
to have this communication not only for scanning, but for regular updates as well.
3. I’m trying to create my scan but I keep seeing a red X when adding in my IP ranges.
Make sure that you have the appropriate IP ranges including in your Scanner Profiles.
4. I ran my scan and it keeps giving me an error.
a. Under Scanner Management, make sure you have a green dot next to your scanner. If not, you
may be having connectivity issues. You can always try rebooting that scanner or consult your
network team if it’s more of a systemic issue.
b. If there is a good connection, did the scan fail due to trying to scan too many IP’s? If you try and
scan more than the allotted IP’s, it will run and ‘complete’ the scan, but then show errored.
Please make sure that you do an ‘ad-hoc’ scan and input each IP individually, or as part of a
range.
5. Why are my results not showing up after a scan?
Scan results usually take 10-15 minutes to process and show in your Dashboard and Active View.
Occasionally this may take up to a half hour, but those are rare times. Provided there are no errors,
you’ll see them up and operational very shortly!
6. This looks great! I’m getting all the data I need and I love the product!
Fantastic! Please reach out to your DDI representative and we can discuss transitioning your account to
a fully functioning account!
