Part I - Research
1. What is CAD?
CAD or computer-aided design is a software in a computer used to replace
manual drafting it helps with design of an objects like metal fabrication
carpentry and mostly used in 3D printing today.
2. The history of development of CAD software
1957-Patrick J. Hanratty was an American computer scientist and
businessperson, known as the "Father of CAD/CAM” he developed
PRONTO, the first commercial numerical-control programming system.
1960-Ivan Sutherland MIT's Lincoln Laboratory created SKETCHPAD a
program allows the user to interact through a screen using a light
pen to draft.
1967- DIGIGRAPHIC is the first commercially available CAD system with
graphic terminals, it goes on sale at a price of $500,000.
1970- SYNTHAVISION is the first commercially available 3D solid
modeling program that rendered though the ray-tracing method It
helped create the CGI animation for the movie Tron in 1982.
1971-Patrick J. Hanratty built ADAM a interactive graphic design, drafting,
and manufacturing system was designed to work on almost all
mainframe computer machines at the time.
1982-AUTODESK AUTOCAD is created it’s the first 2D design CAD
software made for PCs to create precise 2D and 3D drawings this
is where CAD is more affordable to the mass
1987-PRO/ENGINEER first parametric 3D CAD system
1995-SOLIDWORKS 95 3D CAD software that was easy-to-use and
affordable.
1996-CATIA CONFERENCING GROUPWARE the first to introduce networked
collaborative work in CAD
2000-ALIBRE DESIGN the first web-based collaborative 3D
design software.
2012-AUTODESK 360 a Cloud based platform that allows you to
collaborate in a cloud.
2013-3D CAD APP developed by CADENAS it’s the first 3D CAD mobile app

3. What are some of the most popular CAD software today?
AutoCAD
AutoCAD is one of the most popular CAD software out there. Developed
and marketed by Autodesk its more ideal for 2D drafting it is not the
easiest to use for 3D modeling. The learning curve to master macros and
scripts is steep for moving beyond simple parts. The software is aimed at
professionals with experience in programming models algorithmically.
TinkerCAD
Its an online 3D design app a simple program geared towards complete
beginners Developed by Autodesk the software features block-building
concept, allowing you to develop models from a set of basic shapes. The
simplicity of the program will have limitation to the designer
Solidworks
Often used by professional 3D designers. Develop by Dassault Systèmes
The software includes a wide range of features such as design validation
tools, or reverse engineering. One of its special features is that unlike
many other software that mimic curves through gently inclining flat
structures. The disadvantage is the limited ability to import .STL files
FreeCAD
free parametric 3D modeling tool that enables you to design real-life
objects of any size Develop by Dassault Systèmes. This software is
designed for beginners and not for professional purposes but is a good
training tool. The options it offers are quite basic but a good starting
point when you have no experience.
Creo
One of market leader in product design Developed and marketed by PTC
(Parametric Technology Corporation). It has functionalities of thermal,
structural, motion, parametric and freestyle surface generation, and
direct modeling

Fusion 360
A cloud-based 3D CAD program also developed and marketed by
Autodesk. The advantage of the Fusion 360° platform is it stores the
entire history of the model including all the changes. By using the power
of the cloud, it brings together the designer to collaborate in creating a
project. It contains numerous design options, including freeform, solid
and mesh modeling.
4. The future of CAD software
The future of cad software will be generative design AI helping the engineers
showing them multiple models or design making the productivity faster with
ai algorithm the design weight, durability, and for commercial parameters,
like production costs or even aesthetic requirements will be improve quicker
than the conventional design process.
The future of cad software could be also trough Augmented Reality (AR),
Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) making the 2D design more
interactive and immersive that will help in shorter development cycles giving
a better final design
Part II – Definition of Terms
1. Assembly
Assembly is the document in which the different parts or other
subassembly are joined or connected creating an assembly
2. Status Bar
The status bar located at the bottom of the SOLIDWORKS window
that gives you information such as description about the tool your
pointer you’re pointing at, the pointers coordinates, the
measurement of the entities it also where it shows the unit system
for the active document.
3. Canvas/Graphics Area
Canvas/Graphics Area is the area in the window where the part,
assembly, or drawing appears.

4. Feature Manager Design Tree
The Feature Manager Design is Located on the left side of the
SOLIDWORKS window it provides the outline view of the active part,
assembly, or drawing.
5. Head Up View Toolbar
The Head Up View Toolbar is located at the top-center corner of the
Drawing Window. It’s the toolbar that contains ways to change or
manipulate the view or angle.
Part III - Reflection (10 pts total)
1. What are your expectations to this course?
Since I don’t have any background in using SOLIDWORKS or any CAD
software I expect to learn how to properly use SOLIDWORKS and
understand how to use it since learning CAD is great for me and my
future.
2. What are your expectations to your instructor?
My expectation for my instructor is to be able to show us how to use
SOLIDWORKS more efficiently and to be able to explain to us the use of
the tools that he will use and use some layman’s terms so that we will
understand the software
3. What are your expectations to yourself?
Since I'm inexperienced in using a CAD software, I expect myself to be
able to digest the teaching and be able to understand how to use
SOLIDWORKS
