HVAC Noise Reduction Guide

The document describes Reetech rectangular silencers. It discusses selecting silencers based on factors like face velocity and pressure drop. It provides details on the construction of the RSIR2 rectangular silencer series, which uses interior splitters made of single pieces with radiused entrances to reduce self-noise. Charts show the static insertion loss in decibels across octave band frequencies for different RSIR2 silencer sizes.

RECTANGULAR SILENCER RSIR2

DESCRIPTION: Model: RSIR2

General
Duct silencers are used to reduce noise from HVAC systems, Air-handling system...
caused by:
• Fan
• Passage of air through straight ducts
• Impact of air flowing through components such as elbows, branches, mixing
boxes etc…

Selecting silencer
The following performance parameters need to be considered when selecting
silencers:
* Face velocity: Face velocity of the air flow through the duct will directly affect the
performance of a silencer. Face velocity must be known to properly determine the
performance of a silencer.
* Pressure Drop: When adding Silencers (or any component) to an HVAC system, the
pressure drop should always be considered. A bad silencer selection resulting
in a high pressure drop can make the entire system operate inefficiently or
ineffectively.
* Generated noise: Airflow generated noise is created as the air flows into, through,
and out of the silencer. In the majority of installations the airflow generated noise is
much less than, and does not contribute to, the silenced noise level on the quiet side
of the silencer. In general, airflow generated noise should be evaluated if static
pressure drops exceed 87 Pa, the noise criteria is below NC-30, or the silencer is
located very close to or in the occupied space.

RECTANGULAR SILENCER RSIR2

Features:
- Acoustical attenuation across Octave band center frequency.
- Optimum absorptive acoustic performance.
- Can be sized to match duct dimensions, eliminating need for expansive
transitions between silencer and duct.
Applications
- Fan Inlet and Discharge
- Air Handling Units
- Rectangular duct work
- General ventilation system

Construction
- The rectangular silencers consist of a series of center and side splitters.
- Interior splitters are fabricated from single piece and have radiused entrance
shapes to provide the maximum aerodynamic efficiency and minimum self-noise
characteristics in the sound attenuator.
* Attachment of interior partitions to the casing are by means of an interlocking
track assembly. Splitters are secured to the outer casing with nose clips at both
ends.
* Sound absorbent materials of splitters are covered in a fire proof glass fiber
tissue to prevent disintegration and entrainment of fibers into the air stream.
