American Government
Course Syllabus
Course Description: American Government is a required course for students. It stresses all aspects of
national government, citizenship, and fundamental economics. Also, required in this course is the
passing of the United States Constitution test and Citizenship test. This class also has an End of
Course Exam (EOC). This class has to be passed to graduate.
Instructional Philosophy: Course material will be introduced from the teacher. Class discussions will
take place over the material. There will be some partner and/or group work while learning portions of
the material. The information from the text will be expected to be read by the student, if it were not
read during the class period. If the material assigned was not finished in class, then it becomes the
responsibility of the student to make sure to get that assignment done outside of class. Homework
will be assigned some, but not every night. There will be quizzes and exams over the material. Some
exams will be open book and some will have study guides handed out prior to the test.

Major Course Projects and Instructional Activities: Important documents timeline, passing of a bill
(role playing as Congress) Supreme Court Case Studies, Constitutional Convention Class Play,
simulated court case, games and puzzles that deal with aspects of the three branches of government.
Classroom Expectations: I expect students to be on time, have any assignment(s) completed on time,
to be respectful to self and others while in class, try to learn, and do to the best of ability.
Supplies and Materials Needed: paper, pencil, hi-lighter, textbook, and folder specific to this class.
There WILL be A LOT of supplemental material handed out for this class.
Homework Policy and Grading Scale: Any homework assigned is due the following school day.
Assignments with grades under 60% may be done in ASAP to be grades at 80% credit. I give
participation points throughout the year. These are made up of assignments the students do, but are
not actually graded. I give credit for them doing the work.

If the student is absent the ASSIGNMENT WILL BE POSTED ON GOOGLE CLASSROOM by the end of
the school day!!!
Extra Help: The high school has an ASAP program (which is an after school tutoring) available for
students that need extra help. If I know ahead of time, I can arrange to be available for students on
an as need basis. Anyone can come by my room before school for help if they need to.
