FOR
DVZ-FSU-B- „OILCHIEF“
Project:
1.0 GENERAL
In general, the type approval certificate is issued on behalf of the government of the flag
country where the manufacturer’s company is seated. This certificate will be
internationally accepted.
The type approval certificate will be issued for a period of 5 years and will be prolonged
automatically if the system’s construction remains unchanged.
The type approval certificate is considered to be a confirmation for the system’s operator
that the system is in accordance with the MARPOL-requirements. For the operator, the
type approval certificate will be permanently valid and will not be subject to the 5-year-
prolongation-term.
The oil-water-separation will be effected in two phases. By using its proper pump P1, the
bilge water is suctioned from the bilge wells, a bilge water reservoir resp. and pressed
through the separator. The oil-water-mixture will, at first, reach the Coarse Separator
Stage I where free oil is separated by means of gravity and is led via Special Control N1
and the corresponding Oil Drain Valve V3.1 to the dirty-oil reservoir. Coarse dirt particles
will settle down on the bottom of the coarse separator chamber and can be drained via a
blow-off valve if required.
The Coalescer consists of oleophile (oil-repellent) material and coalgates smallest oil
droplets to drops of a defined size that will, due to their proper buoyancy, then ascend to
the hydro-cyclone‘s oil collector. There, they will be separated together with the already
separated oil. The accordingly cleaned water that is now free from oil particles will then
pass a special Fine Separation Unit (FSU) with oil detecting/discharge device N3/V3.3
and will be delivered overboard via Valve V4.1 as clean water. Valve V4.1 will be opened
for a standard flow and only closed if the Oil Drain Valves V3.1, V3.2 or V3.3 are opened.
A 15 ppm-alarm will monitoring continuously the outboard water. In case the oil
concentration will be too high, 3-way-valve V5.1 is automatically activated and the water
will be led back to the bilge and not overboard.
FSU-BY-PASS-FUNCTION
The water from the oily water separator is leading by an 3-way valve (FSU-by-pass-valve)
to the fine separation stage (FSU). When the oil-in-water monitor is showing an oil
content less than 15 ppm the 3-way FSU-by-pass-valve is automatically by-passing the
fine separation stage and leading the water directly to over board till the ppm value is
increased above 15 ppm.
No special mounting position is to be considered for the installation aboard. The suction
head up to the pump suction flange will be limited to 6 m including losses due to pipe
friction, valves and filters. In case of an increased suction head, the transfer pump is to be
mounted separately from the separator.
REMARKS: 3-way test cock acc. to IMO Resolution MEPC 107 (49) must be installed at the
overboard line “A5”
A1 from bilge A3 to dirty oil tank A5 overboard discharge
A2 from hydrophor A4 return to bilge
For back-scouring the separator system, either freshwater as well as seawater can be
used. The connection will have an internal thread of ¾”. The intake pressure of the
separator is to be limited to 1.5 bar. The classification societies‘ regulations in respect of
connections to the freshwater-hydrofor-system are to be considered.
In general, the control valves of the separator system will operate by using compressed-
air (work air).
All separator consumers will have corresponding common factory-mounted service lines.
The shipyard only has to provide the central connection to the work-air system aboard.
The working air pressure should be limited to 5 – 6 bar. The work air consumption will
only be unimportant due to the fact that it will merely be used for valve opening and
closing and can be neglected accordingly.

Remark
The electric heating capacity for the type DVZ 500 FSU-”OILCHIEF” to DVZ 10000 FSU-
”OILCHIEF” is only a stand heating on ships operating with heavy fuel oil. The bilge tank
must be heated.
Check if electric main supply is corresponding with the data of the type
plate inside of the front door of the el. switch box. If not, change the cable
bridges of the Transformer accordingly.
Check if all foundation bolts and flange connections of the unit and its pipe
system are well fastened. Check if the piping dimensions are in acc. to
DVZ instructions.

MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS
An oily water separator is not a main engine, the ships operation is not dependent from it,
and the ship owners earn no profit with it. Often an oily water separator is still destinated
a ”necessary evil". This is a false opinion!
The use of the oily water separator may protect the ship owner and ship crew getting
fined, because of prohibited pollution of the sea from oil.
The nowadays problems on board of ships are well-known to us from long years’
experience. This knowledge you will find in the design of the DVZ-FSU-“OILCHIEF”-
System. The design and function are simple and robust; the maintenance is limited to a
minimum.
From our experience from the past we know, that the most DVZ-oily water separators
make no problems if they are continuously running for long time.
Though the DVZ-FSU-"OILCHIEF" is designed very simple, from time to time it needs
some "petting".
Before maintenance and service switch of the main power supply and stop the water flow.

Checking of safety valves
Checking if all screws and bolts are fast seated
Dismantling of all valves, cleaning and if necessary renewing of O-rings, sealings
etc.
IMPORTANT Keep the bilge water as clean as possible from chemicals, cleaners,
detergents and others to avoid emulsions and keep a long and maintenance free
operation of the unit!
Spare parts for standard units. Subject to technical modifications without notice.
After installation and before first using it is absolutely necessary that the whole fine-
separation-cartridge DVZ-FSC gets good soaking and is completely dipped under water
for a minimum of 8 hours.
After this soaking procedure, the oily water separator DVZ FSU-“OILCHIEF” is ready for
startup.

Introduction
The DVZ-BilgMon488 bilge alarm has been designed specifically for use in conjunction with 15 ppm oil-water separator units. DVZ-
BilgMon488 performance meets the requirements of the International Maritime Organisation specifications for 15 ppm bilge alarms
contained in resolution MEPC. 107(49).
DVZ-Bilgmon488 is equipped with 2 adjustable alarms that are triggered when the oil-content of the processed sample exceeds the set limit
(1 – 15 ppm, works-adjusted to 15ppm). Alarm outputs consist of relays and indicator LEDs. Additionally a 0(4) – 20 mA current output
signal (corresponding to 0 – 30 ppm) is available to enable remote surveillance and recording of oil contents.
Downloading the operating log of DVZ-BilgMon488 can be done through a USB-interface. This requires driver software and cables that can
be supplied on demand.
Construction
DVZ-BilgMon488 consists of two main parts, the MASTER unit (housing with LCD, buttons and LEDs) and the SENSOR unit (housing
with pipe fittings).
The MASTER unit contains all the electronics used for control and data storage of the bilge alarm. Mounted in the lid of the MASTER
housing is the main memory containing the bilge alarm log.
The SENSOR unit contains electronics for measuring the sample stream. The SENSOR unit also holds the measurement calibration data.
Communication with the MASTER unit is done wireless hence the SENSOR unit is hermetically sealed and shall not be opened.
Operation
Optical sensors monitors the amount of light scattered and absorbed by the oil droplets in the sample stream. Sensor signals are processed
by a microprocessor to produce a corresponding oil content (ppm) output. The output is communicated to the MASTER unit where it is
processed. The MASTER unit takes action, such as alarm activation, logging etc., depending on the oil content and the separator signal.
Settings that affect the behaviour of the bilge alarm are described in detail in the ”Operating Instructions” section.
Zero point calibration can be re-adjusted on site whereas full sensor calibration according to IMO-requirements is performed by
manufacturer.
Operating Instructions
The menu system of DVZ-Bilgmon488 is organised into 5 top menus:
1. Main menu.
2. Info menu.
3. Log menu.
4. Cleaning/test menu.
5. Settings menu.
Some of the menus also contain submenus for displaying or setting the properties of the apparatus.
Navigating the menus is done by using the 4 push buttons located beneath the LCD display. In this document they are referred to as (from
left to right) MINUS, PLUS, ABORT and ENTER. LONG_ENTER means keeping the ENTER button pressed for more than 2 seconds. By
using the above mentioned buttons the user is able to navigate menus, enter values and activate different functions of the DVZ-Bilgmon488.
• Main menu
After start the display will show the main menu. The apparatus can only be activated when the display shows the main menu hence the
user has to be sure that the apparatus is left in the main menu state after performing settings, cleaning, tests etc. Contrast of the LCD

The ”main menu” is displayed at startup.
The values shown in this menu are date,
time, the measured oil-content of the
sample in parts per million (ppm) and the
position of the clean water valve (SPL
= sample, WTR = clean water).
Press PLUS to go to next menu.
Return to this menu by pressing ABORT
several times.
If the second row shows “Lost sensor com!”
see section Troubleshooting.
If the alarm is on (when unit is active) the
user can acknowledge it by pressing one of
the buttons.
Acknowledging will turn off the alarm output
but the alarm led will remain lit until the
PPM-value is below the set alarm limit.

Pressing the MINUS button decreases the
PPM value by 1.0. Pressing the PLUS
button increases the PPM value by 1.0.
Pressing the ABORT button toggles the
simulated separator input (SEP_OFF =
separator off, SEP_ON = separator on). In
the upper right corner of the display an
indication is given of
the clean water valve position.
Contrast: 010%
Pressing the MINUS button decreases the
contrast value by 10%.
Pressing the PLUS button increases the
contrast value by 10%.
Response test
Step 1
To check that the sensor responds to objects in the measuring path unscrew the cleaning cap (top of SENSOR housing) and insert a long
plastic rod or something similar into the measuring path. Do not use anything that might might scratch or in other ways damage the glass
tube inside the SENSOR housing (as for example screwdrivers). If the sensor is working properly the display should read “PPM>30.0” (main
menu). Note that the air-detection feature of the SENSOR requires the glass tube to be filled with water during this test for it to work.
Step 2 Testing alarms and valves are done in simulation mode (see “Simulation”) or in the “Test outputs” submenu of the cleaning & test
menu since this doesn't require opening the MASTER housing.
Alternative
To make step 1 of the response test affect alarms and valves the apparatus needs to be active. DVZ-Bilgmon 488 is activated (flashing
green led) when in main menu and the separator input signal is active. Activation can be done by strapping connections 10 and 11. This
method is not recommended since there is an obvious risk of forgetting the strap and that it requires opening the MASTER unit.
Maintenance
The DVZ-Bilgmon488 can be set to autoflush. This means that the sensor tube is flushed with clean water at durations and intervals as set
in the settings menu. Autoflush is only active when in main menu and BilgeMon488 is not active.
Cleaning the measurement unit should be done using a soft bottle-brush and mild detergent. Note that there is a glass tube inside the
SENSOR unit, so don't use anything that might scratch or damage the glass (i.e. metal objects). If the glass tube is layered with rust or
similar try using low concentrated acid (for example hydrochloric acid). Rinse well and make sure you protect your eyes, skin and airways if
using acidic substances.
