Rizal Bill

Instilling nationalism among the Filipino youth will be achieved through the
teaching of the life and works of Rizal.
Intention/Reason

All Filipinos must read the two novels of Rizal in order to know what our identity is.

Arguments Allow us to be conscious as people and citizens of the Philippines to learn and
prepare ourselves for painful sacrifices that has helped us attain the freedom that we
may have now in the present.

Takeaway Foster the better appreciation of our national hero’s role in fighting for freedom
under the colonialism of the Spaniards, not to go against any religion

“Nationalism is nourished by a sense
of history. It is of its essence to know
profoundly the past so that we may be
in complete openness when the men
who made that history and in intimate
communication with their thoughts
their deeds and their noble lives”

Intention/Reas Instilling nationalism among the Filipino youth will be achieved through the teaching of the
on life and works of Rizal.

Arguments Rizal did not mean to teach how religion must be practiced, instead he focused on awakening
the Filipino minds about their current situation during the time of the Spanish colonization.
The novels of Rizal showed the history of the Filipinos under the operation of the Spaniards.
Through his novel he made us aware of our national dignity, personal pride in patriotism. The
novel informs us that the citizens of the Philippines should not be unjustly abused and
disagreed by foreign invaders in our own country but we have our right for freedom and
choose the way we live.

Takeaway Foster the better appreciation of our national hero’s role in fighting for freedom under the
colonialism of the Spaniards, not to go against any religion.
“The people who would eliminate the books
of Rizal from the schools…would bot out
from our minds the memory of the national
hero…this is not a fight against Recto but a
fight against Rizal…now that Rizal is dead
and they can no longer attempt at his life,
they are attempting to blot out his memory.”

Rizal Bill

Convince religious authorities to approve the public use of Rizal’s writing to promote a
Intention/Reason sane and constructive nationalism.

Rizal was a patriot and an advocate of the truth. “Hence we must approve the desire of
many that Rizal’s writing must be made public”

Rizal’s works does not contradict the Catholic doctrine. "The Catholic Church in itself' is
never against the legitimate political and social aspirations of any people."
Arguments
As for the priestly abuses in the book, "Why should we deny it?" There were unfaithful
priests, like the Apostles Peter and Judas. Rizal is simply pointing out the flaws that the
church bear but these flaws does not imply that the doctrine is untrue. Rizal’s writings do
not hold a serious threat to the faith of a mature and educated Catholic. In fact, these
books are aligned to the Gospel and it shall help imbibe patriotism among the people.

However, he suggested that the books be taught with proper direction and guidance
because the young perceives whatever they see in print as true.

Not everyone in the religious sector embraces a negative impression about Rizal’s works.
Takeaway Religious and political intentions could go hand in hand if one possesses an open mind.
