MID-Semester Examination Feb-2021
M.E. (CAD/CAM) Semester- I
Sub: Advanced Machine Design (3710801) Date: 3/2/2021
Time: 1.30 Hrs Marks: 30
Instructions:
1. Attempt all questions.
2. Make suitable assumptions wherever necessary.
3. Figures to the right indicate full marks.
Q.1 Attempt any two: 10
(a) State the different theories of failures. Discuss the Distortion Energy theory.
(b) Explain the effect of roughness, velocity and lubrication on friction and wear.
(c) Describe 3- d Mohr circle and its various conditions.
(d) Explain fatigue under complex stresses with Manson’s hypothesis.
Q.2 (a) Linear damage (Minor’s rule) method in fatigue failure, explain in detail. 05
(b) Fatigue crack propagation and life estimation for constant amplitude stress. 05
OR
(b) A transmission shaft carries a pulley midway between the two bearings. The bending 05
moment at the pulley varies from 350 N-m to 900 N-m, as the torsional moment in
the shaft varies from 150 N-m to 350 N-m. The frequencies of variation of bending
and torsional moments are equal to the shaft speed. The shaft is made of steel FeE
400 (σ ultimate = 520 MPa and σ yield = 380 MPa). The corrected endurance limit
of the shaft is 220 MPa. Determine the diameter of the shaft using a factor of safety
= 4.
Q.3 (a) Describe Hydrostatic and EHD (Elasto hydrodynamic) Lubrication. 05
(b) Derive the Reynold’s equation for 3-D hydrodynamic journal bearing. State the 05
assumptions made in derivation.
OR
(b) Design a journal bearing from the following given data for a centrifugal pump:
05
Load = 20 kN
Speed = 900 r.p.m.
Diameter of journal = 0.15 m
Operating temperature of oil = 520 C
Cd/D ratio = 0.001
Energy dissipation constant = 1232
Design parameters are as below :
L/D ratio = 1 to 2
Permissible bearing pressure = 0.8 to 1.2 MPa
Zn/p = 28.5
Z = 0.025 kg/m*s
