Mission III: Geoinformatics
The main function of Mission III is to build, maintain and effectively manage IT resources to
ensure archival and dissemination of information to stakeholders. It aims to deliver
accurate, up-to-date and comprehensive products and services and provide crucial
support to all missions of the organization. Mission III is actively involved in national as well
as international collaborative initiatives (NSDI, NDSAP, NGIS etc.) concerning
dissemination of geoinformation. Mission III plays a vital role in coordinating with the Policy
Support System of GSI and Ministry of Mines on the issues pertaining to information
dissemination policies and guidelines. The major activities of Mission III are categorised as
follows:
Mission IIIA - IT Infrastructure & Connectivity,
and Data Repository & Management: Mission
IIIA maintains and manages the IT Infra-
structure Connectivity, Applications and
Databases in GSI and provides the necessary
setup to archive and disseminate data and
deliver geo-information to various stakeholders
in an effective way. GSI has implemented an
integrated IT-enablement system - Online Core
Business Integrated System (OCBIS) with a
goal towards comprehensive data management across its Missions and Support systems.
GSI has started disseminating valuable geoscientific information through the Portal and
Bhukosh, the Geospatial store. OCBIS went live on 1st April 2017.

Mission IIIB - Information Delivery (Publi-
cation & Library): All major categories of GSI
publications (Memoirs, Bulletins, Records,
Special Publications, Misc-ellaneous
Publications, Catalogues, Palaeontologia
Indica, Indian Journal of Geosciences, e-
news etc.) are uploaded in the OCBIS portal
as per the existing data sharing and access
policy of GSI. The Publication division,
CHQ, Kolkata is subscribing online earth
science journals for use by GSI geoscientists.

Mission IIIC - Map, Geoinformatics & Data


Integration: GSI, has been mandated to prepare
both analog and digital geological maps / map
databases for the entire country and publication
of the same. Maps compiled and published are:
1:50K Geological Maps, Geological Quadrangle
Maps (GQM), Second Edition of GQM, District

— The Portal repository is now a storehouse for 21,669 unpublished reports, 1,060 maps,
1,099 publications, 1,215 geophysical dataset, multi-thematic geoscientific dataset,
1566 natural specimen 2D & 3D photographs and various other dataset for public
dissemination
— Central Library of GSI at Kolkata houses (as on 31.01.2018) :
Books - 30,000 nos.
Journals - 3,50,000 nos.
Unpublished Reports - 43,950 nos.
