Nature of Course Content and Goals
Program The mission of the criminal justice major at North Carolina Wesleyan College is to educate
Mission students in the criminal justice areas of law enforcement, courts, and corrections. The theoretical
and legal basis upon which the system is founded is also examined. The degree may also prepare
students for advanced degrees and for positions within the criminal justice system and related
fields of study. Students are encouraged to engage in lifelong learning and community
engagement.
Program 1. assist students in understanding the complexity of the criminal justice system as it addresses
Goals criminal behavior through prevention and intervention strategies.
2. provide instruction and guidance to assist students in understanding the theories and issues
related to criminal justice.
3. provide students with opportunities for critical analysis of situations, including application of
relevant theoretical and legal explanations in the development of appropriate action.
Course The introductory course will acquaint the students with the theoretical foundation of the criminal
Description justice system. This course will cover the relationship of law and morality, giving the student a
philosophical base from which to establish an understanding of the missions of the criminal
justice system.
Course 1. identify and define the three components of the criminal justice system and their

encountered by criminal justice professionals.
3. demonstrate an understanding of how the Criminal Justice System utilizes various parts of the
United States judicial system.
These outcomes may be measured by test, quizzes, role plays, papers, field trips, internships and
practical exercises.

Attendance Course enrollment and participation will be monitored and verified for all students during the
Policy: semester. Lack of participation and attendance may jeopardize enrollment status. Each
student is expected to meet course expectations by completing the coursework required.
Active participation and staying abreast of the material is essential to success in the class.

Participation Students who assume positions of responsibility must “show up” in order to be effective.
and Attendance: Students are expected to be attentive to the course content by completing assigned readings,
and submitting all work on course assignments in a complete and timely fashion.
Attendance is required and expected and will impact your ability to succeed and obtain a
satisfactory grade in this class. Students who arrive late for class or leave during class are
marked tardy for the day (whether or not they return after leaving). Students who are
habitually late for class (more than three times) may be dropped from the course. Students,
who sleep in class, show up without the textbook, etc. will receive a zero for the day, and may
be dropped from the course. Any student who leaves the classroom during an exam will
receive an ‘F’ on that test.
Students absent for six hours of class for any reason other than official College-sanctioned
events will automatically be dropped from the course.
Assignment Assignments are to be completed according to the timeline posted in the syllabus. It is
Policy: important to keep up and complete work on time. There are no make-up exams, or quizzes
without prior consent of the instructor. The opportunity to make up work is not guaranteed.
Late Work: Late work must be submitted by the next class meeting for partial credit. Please make sure
that you discuss with instructor.
Academic Academic Integrity: North Carolina Wesleyan College and faculty guarantee the integrity of

Specific attention should be given to the section regarding “Plagiarism and Cheating.”
Acts of cheating, plagiarism, falsification or attempts to cheat, plagiarize or falsify will not be
tolerated. Cheating is defined as the giving or receiving of information illicitly with intent to
deceive the instructor in his or her effort to grade fairly any academic work. Plagiarism is to
take and use as one’s own the thoughts, writings, or inventions of another (Oxford English
Dictionary). It is plagiarism when one uses direct quotations without proper credit and
appropriate quotation marks, and when one uses the ideas of another without written proper
credit.
The professor reserves the right to submit student’s work through plagiarism software to
determine the authenticity and ownership of the information.
If the professor becomes aware of a potential academic integrity violation, the student will be
contacted using the procedures outlined in the College Catalog. If an academic integrity
violation has taken place, the instructor reserves the right to assign a grade penalty up to and
including an F for the course.
If you include material in your work that is not your own original thought, then a citation must
be included in the text of the document and in the reference list. Failure to cite sources will be
viewed as a violation of the academic integrity policy. Note: It is better to over cite sources,
than to be questioned regarding your integrity. If you have question, concerns, or need
clarification, please let the professor know.
Plagiarism includes copying and pasting material from the internet or other sources into
assignments without properly citing the source of the material.
Episodes of academic dishonesty are reported to the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The
potential penalty for academic dishonesty includes a failing grade on a particular assignment, a
failing grade for the entire course, or charges against the student with the appropriate
disciplinary body.
Appropriate Classroom Etiquette: Pagers, cells phones, and other electronic devices are to be TURNED
Behavior OFF or SILENCED during class time. Please note that the vibrate mode is NOT an acceptable
alternative. Cell phones are not to be kept on the desk top during class time, but should be
stored in a book bag, purse, etc.
Students are expected to be respectful of each other and the professor by arriving on time and
remaining for the entire class period. It is strongly suggested that you not schedule
appointments that conflict with the class meeting time. Additional respect is expected by
speaking one at a time and not having private conversations with classmates while class is in
session.
Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to the following:
Theft: Students may not post, transmit, promote, or distribute content that violates copyright
or other protected intellectual property rights. Unauthorized use of university property is
prohibited. Theft or abuse of computer resources is prohibited.
Disrespect: Students may not harass, threaten, or embarrass others. Students may not post,
transmit, promote, or distribute content that is racially, religiously, or ethnically offensive or is
harmful, abusive, vulgar, sexually explicit, or otherwise potentially offensive. Students must
refrain from behavior that may be perceived as inappropriate, offensive, and unfair and must
treat all other learners, faculty, staff, and administrators with respect at all times.
Dishonesty: Students may not intentionally provide false information, forge, alter, or falsify
documents. Students may not represent the academic work of others as their own.
Students engaging in prohibited conduct will be subject to disciplinary action, including, but
not limited to: course failure, probation, suspension, or expulsion. Such sanctions may lead to
additional academic and financial consequences.
Jenzabar, Jenzabar / eRacer / my.ncwc.edu will be used for this course. Therefore, students should
eRacer, check the announcement site daily for additional information regarding course requirements,
my.ncwc.edu unannounced quizzes, class meetings, assignments, and other pertinent information. In
addition, grades for this course will be posted via the online grade book and thus are accessible
to the student at all times.
Academic Should a student have a dispute about a course grade, the student should first address the
Appeals: concern with the course instructor. If discussions with the course instructor, program
coordinator and division chair do not lead to a satisfactory conclusion, there is a process for
filing an academic appeal. Please reference the Graduate Catalog for more information.
Writing Written assignments must be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins and 12-point Times
Expectations: Romans font.
The Criminal Justice program uses only the APA format and style of notation to credit all
sources that are not the student’s own.
There is an art to writing. Spelling, grammar, punctuation and word usage are all tools of that
art. Writing should show careful attention to these elements. Work that does not exhibit care
with regard to these elements will be considered as inadequate for undergraduate writing and
graded accordingly.
Media Critique Students will be given a media clip to watch to determine the relevance and accuracy of the
information. A minimum 3 page paper critique, which includes a minimum of 3 outside
sources, will compare and contrast the information using the textbook(s) and outside sources.
Knowledge The format will vary as appropriate to the material being covered and may be administered
Demonstrations: online. Knowledge demonstrations may be composed of essay, multiple choice, matching, and
completion, true false, and case studies. Four knowledge demonstrations will be given as
indicated below and in the course outline. The dates for knowledge demonstrations are as
follows:

There will be NO makeup tests or quizzes. The only exception is for students who miss class
due to an official, documented College-sanctioned event. Therefore if the student misses a
class on a test or quiz date, a zero will be averaged into the final grade. Test dates are
provided in advance to ensure that you do not schedule appointments, events, etc. that will
hinder your attendance on test dates.
Extra Credit: Do not rely upon the opportunity for extra credit to supplement your final grade. Therefore
students should be mindful of their grades from the beginning of the semester as extra credit
opportunities cannot be guaranteed.
