We would like to thank Almighty Allah for giving us the patience and the ability to work hard
with tremendous devotion. First and foremost thanks to our Course Instructor, Mirza Ferdous for
his invaluable guidance, encouragement and suggestion throughout the entire MIS105 course.
Without his support and faith in us it would not have been possible to complete and submit this
report.

It was a very enriching and enthralling for us to prepare this report. Our report writing skills have
improved a lot while doing it. Despite our utmost care still there might be some typing errors.
We sincerely apologies for this.

Basic bank limited (Bangladesh small industries and commerce bank limited) registered
under the companies act 1913 on 2 nd august of 1988 started operation from 21 st January
1989. This bank started as a joint venture of BCC foundation (BCC 70% and
Government30%). The government of Bangladesh took over 100% ownership of the
bank on 4th June 1992. This is a public bank and is not nationalized. It runs like a private
bank.

The reason we chose the Bashundhara branch of this bank is because this is the
newest most opened bank branch in Bashundhara Residential area. And therefore to
our best interest, it likely has the most advanced systems used for banking on the
present date.

This project has definitely helped us to have a deeper look into the aspects we studied
about in the MIS105 class. The reason we chose a bank as our research organization is
because these days banks are a lot more than just creating, depositing and withdrawing
money from an account.
The IT sector has have its largest growth with banks, than any other business
oraganizations.
Banks use Information Technology in all aspects of running its business. You won’t be
able to find a single bank which does not offer a complete online transaction service to
its customers these days.

Here is a list of a few Softwares and Hardwares BASIC BANK uses to carry out its
everyday business :

• i.bank---- ( internet Banking)
Internet banking allows customers of a bankto conduct financial transactions on a
secure website operated by the institution.
To access a financial institution's online banking facility, a customer having personal
Internet access must register with the institution for the service, and set up some
password (under various names) for customer verification. The password for online
banking is normally not the same as others. Financial institutions now routinely allocate
customer numbers (also under various names), whether or not customers intend to
access their online banking facility. Customer numbers are normally not the same as
account numbers, because a number of accounts can be linked to the one customer
number. The customer will link to the customer number any of those accounts which the
customer controls, which may be cheque, savings, loan, credit card and other accounts.
Customer numbers will also not be the same as any debit or credit card issued by the
financial institution to the customer.
To access online banking, the customer would go to the financial institution's website,
and enter the online banking facility using the customer number and password. Some
financial institutions have set up additional security steps for access.
What Internet Banking offers:
• Balance enquiry
• View account statement
• View loans schedule
• View deposit schedule

• SMS Banking ---- (Mobile Phone Banking)

The SMS Banking facility works through the concept of SMS (Short Message Service)
functionality available in your mobile phone.

SMS Banking facility of the Bank can be divided into two categories - PUSH & PULL

PUSH Services (ALERTS): PUSH based SMS services shall enable the Bank to send
information to the customer's mobile on the occurrence of certain transactions in the
account.
Another type of push message is One Time Password(OTPs). OTPs are the latest tool
used by financial and banking service providers in the fight against cyber fraud. Instead
of relying on traditional memorized passwords, OTPs are requested by consumers each
time they want to perform transactions using the online or mobile banking interface.
When the request is received the password is sent to the consumer’s phone via SMS.
The password is expired once it has been used or once its scheduled life-cycle has
expired.

PULL Services (REQUESTS): PULL based SMS services allow the customers to
request for various information relating to their account besides giving instructions for
certain facilities. Customers are to send SMS in the prescribed format to 56767 or
9986667045 based on which the Bank will then send the information to the customer as
an SMS.

• AML-Trac---- (Anti Money Laundering Software)

• NameChecker ---- (Online Sanctions List checking tool)
• Cumulus---- (Cash Management Software)
With the multitude of delivery channels available to customers today it is imperative for
any bank, if they wish to remain competitive, to make maximum use of the entire
communications medium available to them. Not only will this cater for the demands of
their existing customers but also to minimise the risk of losing them to aggressive
competitors.
Cumulus is a purpose-built system that enables organisations charged with the
responsibility of managing client monies to do so using virtual banking techniques. It
enables the company to operate one, or more, client monies account per currency at
their bankers and to create individual client money sub accounts to reflect the
breakdown of the funds held at the bank.
Interest can be calculated and applied to client monies accounts on a cleared balance
basis reflecting the interest being paid by the bank.
Customers can be given full Internet access to their accounts so that they remain up-to-
the-minute with what's happening. Furthermore, they can initiate secure payments
either over the SWIFT network or through the clearing system such that they manage
their accounts more effectively. From the bank's perspective straight through processing
of payments can be achieved with full control over available funds ensuring that money
can never be paid away that the customer does not have.
Cumulus comes with standard XML or CSV interfaces into your main general ledger
system. Alternative solutions can be implemented if required.

• Server Operating System: Windows 2003

• Workstation Operating System: Windows XP Pro

Regular Softwares–
Microsoft word 2007 & Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Hardwares :

Apart from the desktop computers on every desk of the 35 employees, the bank branch
also has a mainframe computer which basically is used in Data storage of its thousand
clients and every standard branch of the bank has one kept, sometimes just for security
or backup.

Server – IBM C19C0

• A server is a system that responds to requests across a computer network to
provide, or help to provide, a network service. Servers can be run on a dedicated
computer, which is also often referred to as 'the server', but many networked
computers are capable of hosting servers. In many cases a computer can
provide several services and have several servers running.
• Servers operate within a client-server architecture, servers are computer
programs running to serve the requests of other programs, the clients. Thus, the
server performs some task on behalf of clients. The clients typically connect to
the server through the network but may run on the same computer. In the context
of Internet Protocol(IP) networking, a server is a program that operates as a
socketlistener.
• Servers often provide essential services across a network, either to private users
inside a large organization or to public users via the Internet. Typical computing
servers are database server, file server, mail server, print server, web server , or
some other kind of server.
• Numerous systems use this client / server networking model including Web sites
and email services. An alternative model, peer-to-peer networking enables all
computers to act as either a server or client as needed.

Other regular hardwares include :

Printer – 2 ( Dot Matrix)

• Dot matrix printing is a type of computer printing which uses a print head that
runs back and forth, or in an up and down motion, on the page and prints by
impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like the print
mechanism on a type writter. However, unlike a typewriter or daisy wheel printer,
letters are drawn out of a dot matrix, and thus, varied fonts and arbitrary graphics
can be produced.

Photocopier – 1
• A photocopier is a machine that makes paper copies of documents and other
visual images quickly and cheaply. Most current photocopiers use a technology
called xerography, a dry process that uses electrostatic charges on a light
sensitive photoreceptor to first attract and then transfer toner particles (a powder)
onto paper in the form of an image. Heat, pressure or a combination of both is
then used to fuse the toner onto the paper. (Copiers can also use other
technologies such as ink jetbut xerography is standard for office copying.)
• Photocopying is widely used in banks. There have been many predictions that
photocopiers will eventually become obsolete as information workers continue to
increase their digital document creation and distribution, and rely less on
distributing actual pieces of paper.
Our Analysis :
The fast growing technology and fast changes in the technology with respect of time
has been pressuring the banking sector to increase their performance by implementing
too sophisticated applications to manage the whole process of the banking. Most of the
softwares are made by specialized software development firms which built softwares
for similar financial organizations.
The softwares that Basic Bank uses were found to be quite user friendly.

Although the softwares used are quite good, there are market leading
application developers like Oracle,Temenos and SAP who have developed award-
winning applications for the financial industry. Oracle Banking Platform, Flexcube
(formerly i-flex Solutions), Microbanker, Finware from ORACLE are greatly used in
banks throughout the globe. SAP has also comeup with its own series of applications
for such financial institutions, for example their “SAP for Banking” , “Corebanking”; “SAP
R/3” were greatly appreciated by clients and offer features like Capital- Retail, Shariah,
Microfinance banking core etc.

As for the hardware part, the bank has just what it needs from reputed brands. It has an
advanced data storage module with sufficient backup measures.
