ENG 2 (PRESENTATION) NOTES: GROUP 2
TITLE: SIGNIFICANCE OF LITERATURE IN TEACHING STUDENTS
INTRODUCTION ABOUT THE TOPIC
1. Children’s literature provides students with the opportunity to respond to literature
and develop their own opinions about the topic.
“Wordless picture books are excellent stimuli for oral and written language”
E.g.,
A Ball for Daisy – A dog’s toy
The Yellow Umbrella -
The Red Book -
2. Children’s literature provides an avenue for students to learn about their own
cultural heritage and the cultures of other people.
“Developing positive attitudes toward our own culture and the cultures of others
is necessary for both social and personal development” (Norton, 2010, p. 3).
E.g., of stories or some folktales, which contain blatant stereotypes and
inaccuracies about certain cultural groups.
Brother Eagle, Sister Sky
“the earth doesn’t belong to us, we belong to the earth”
“it will be the end of living and the beginning of survival”
The Rough Face Girl
Some stories or books that are more accurate in teaching the differences.
E.g.,
“Eric” from Tales from Outer Suburbia
Going Home
3. Children’s literature helps students develop emotional intelligence. Stories have
the power to promote emotional and moral development.
Children’s literature “contains numerous moments of crisis, when characters make
moral decisions and contemplate the reasons for their decisions,” an important skill for
children to see modeled (Norton, 2010, p. 34).
E.g.,
Guji Guji
The Scar
Selma - sheep
The Big Box - freedom
4. Children’s literature also encourages creativity.
“the role that literature plays in nurturing and expanding the imagination”
E.g.,
The House in the Night
Zin! Zin! Zin! A Violin
Look Closer: Art Masterpieces Through The Ages
5. Children’s literature is of value because it fosters personality and social
development.
“acceptable relationships require an understanding of the feelings and viewpoints of
others”
E.g.,
And Tango Makes Three – a story of 2 boy penguin in love
Molly’s Family
Heather Has Two Mommies
Daddy’s Roommate
Loop the Loop
A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever
6. Children’s literature is of value because it is a timeless tradition, one in which
“books are the major means of transmitting our literary heritage from one generation to
the next”
E.g.,
Dr. Seuss’ And to Think That I Heard it on Mulberry Street
The Cat in the Hat
Example of a good collection of these classic rhymes
Hey Diddle Diddle
Other Mother Goose Rhymes
William Shakespeare’s works
Romeo and Juliet
The Tempest

Hello!!!!
And Welcome back to Rachelle Out Loud!

With stories!!
Well, y’all know that I loveeeeeee reading books and I love teaching my pupils have fun and use their
opinions, cultural knowledge, emotions, creativity, values and social developments when reading
different books! And that is exactly what this story is all about….
Oh by the way, the title of the story that we are reading today is “the Significance of literature in
teaching students”
Today’s story is being read with the permission from the author and publisher.
“the Significance of literature in teaching students” written by Prof. Olivia G. Dimalanta, illustrated by
the Group 2 – Eng 2 and published by the Group 2 press!
Narrator: Once upon a time, there lived 8 beautiful young girls who were searching for different books
according to their personalities and with this book, we are also going to discover the significance of
literature in teaching students like you!
Ohhhh here are the 8 beautiful young ladies!
The first girl is named, Edfrenni and she loves to respond to literature and develop her own opinions
about the topic.
The two princesses, Alona and Angelica, loved their own cultural heritage so much and the cultures of
other people as well.
Paula and Genelene, were very curious about people’s emotions and feelings that is why they want to
develop their emotional intelligence to promote emotional and moral development to other children.
And there is Diana, she loves art and is very creative!
And there is Rona and Alrish who wants to read books of values to foster personality and social
developments, and also, because they know values is indeed a timeless tradition.
Are you ready to join them in their journey in finding books that matches their personality and likes? Are
you ready to dive in the story that will show the significance of literature in teaching students like you?
If your answer is yes, then That is Great!
-------------------------------------
No. 1 Significance
Hey! I’m looking for someone who loves to read.
Oh wait, I know someone!
She is a BEED student.
Her name is Edfrenni, and that is me!
Why do I love literature? The reason is, it stimulates my brain to think deeper or read between the lines.
While reading, it is possible to analyze and evaluate the literature. As a result, it strengthens my
cognitive development domain. It allows me to express my thoughts, reasoning, and understanding or,
to be specific, my opinions regarding the literature I read.
I am also fond of reading wordless picture books! Oh, you are not familiar with this kind of book? Are
you asking if it is possible to read it with only pictures on it? Of course!
Wait, let me introduce to you one of the wordless picture books.
(PLAY THE 5-MINS VIDEO)
How did she read the wordless picture book?! To be able to read it, you have to infer. Using your
imagination and the clues given by the author, deduce it with your own schema to form a conclusion
about the events occurring in the story.
Now, let me give you another wordless pictures book and let’s see if you now can read these kinds of
books.
(Show the picture of A Ball for Daisy)
Wow! You are doing a great job! We are now able to evaluate the images and construct own narration.
Also, as what I stated earlier, I can develop my opinion to express myself through summarizing the plot
of a wordless books. The opinion I’ll form is connected with what I believe or my idea regarding the story,
and so do you. I have my own opinion, and you have yours.
In the video, she said on the part that the girl loses some interest on her teacher’s math lesson so she
can’t resist the temptation. However, on my viewpoint, I assume that she just unintentionally glanced on
the book and got curious that is why she read it.
(don’t know how to end this)
If you noticed, we have different opinions and that is because we have different cognitive functions.
No. 2 Significance
Queen: Hi! I am Princess Angelica
Alona: and I am Princess Alona
Both: and we're from the kingdom where culture is our priority and other's culture bring us curiousity,
the kingdom heritage!
Q: In our kingdom, we really love our own cultural heritage so much and of course other's culture as well.
A: Yes, it is true, my sister. It is crucial in our kingdom to learn these values because developing positive
attitudes toward our own culture and the cultures of others is necessary for our social and personal
development.
Q: however, one should be careful in selecting which books to recommend to readers. There are many
stories, some folktales, which contain blatant stereotypes and inaccuracies about our cultural and
other's cultural groups.
Q: Do you know some literacies which contains blatant stereotypes and inaccuracies about one's
culture?
Q: Let me show you one.
(The Rough-Face Girl of Martin, 1992) ---video or something to supplement the example
Q: This story depicts Native Americans in a misguided way and contain misinterpretations of what
actually occurred in history. The Iroquois tribe in The Rough-Face Girl of Martin, 1992. Historically, lived
in long houses, but the illustrator depicts these Native American as living in teepees.
Q: This is a clichéd view, and it can be very damaging in perpetuating stereotypes if we are not cautious
in the books we have in our kingdom.
A: But of course, there are books that are accurate in cultural differences of others. This is a story called
"Eric" from Tales from Outer Suburbia of Tan, 2009.
A: It is a touching story about a family who takes in a foreign exchange student and must learn about
their guest and accept the differences between their cultures.
A: Here are some clips from the story of "Eric"
---- playyy
A: I really do love it for it has a positive message about encouraging acceptance of the cultural
differences between people, which is something that we want to help nurture in our kingdom.
A: Many books are available that depicts culture as an important piece of society that is to be treasured
and valued, and those books can have great value for our kingdom.
No. 3 Significance
N: There are 2 best friends who are always a top achiever in their school. There are times that they
argue because the don’t want to be beaten by each other. Hmmm, are you curious about their story?
Let’s dig in!
………..
P: Hello! Everyone my name is Paula.
Today, you will know me better.
I’m the one who loves books and reading different stories, especially short stories. Even online I also love
to read stories, especially the happy ending, so I believe in happy ending. Since up to now my father and
my mother are still in love with each other.
The reason why I love reading stories, it helps me to develop my emotional and moral intelligence. The
lessons I get from the stories I read; I apply it to myself. Stories are so powerful to enhance our skills
especially when it comes in making decisions. My mother always reminds me that now I should learn to
identify the right and wrong so that when the day comes that I have to make a decision and they are not
by my side, I know what should and is right to do.
One of the stories that I’ve read that really mark in my mind is entitled “The Golden Touch by Nathaniel
Hawthorne” the lesson that I get from his story is, being greed will always lead to downfall. We must be
contented of what we have already.
See? Reading stories can teach you and enhance your understanding to balance which is right and not to
do. Since stories is part of literature.
------ (my phone ringing)
P: Owww wait my best friend genelene is calling, excuse me.!
Hello Gen, why did you call?
G: Nothing, I just want to tell you my realization about ANG ALAMAT ni LANGGAM at ni TIPAKLONG. I
learned that we need to obey the authorities of those older than us at the time of the disaster because
for our safety and we also need to be ready and not just staring so that we do not starve after or during
the disaster like typhoon. I love Langgam on being industrious and I hate Tipaklong from being lazy but
he laughed at Langgam at first and then during typhoon he had nothing to eat. He just asked Langgam
for food. And it’s very nice that Langgam still decided to share his food to Tipaklong instead of being
selfish.
And also, you are right that stories can help us to develop our emotional and moral intelligence. We
know when we should react and understand something and we can also learn a lot when it comes to
making decisions which is moral intelligence like what Langgam did to Tipaklong, Langgam choose to
share his food to Tipaklong even Tipaklong laugh to him at first.
And I was able to search for different types of stories that we can use, just like;
Anecdote
Fable
Parable
Myth
Farce
Legend
Fairy tale
Tragic tale
Fiction and;
Satire
Thanks, pau, for sharing this story for me!
Ok bye and goodnight.
No. 4 Significance
Hi! My name is Diana!
And I love art because I am very creative!
I also love reading books because it enhances my creativity and widen my imagination.
I believe that literature plays in nurturing and expanding the imagination.
I love imaginative books because it teaches me about music and art, also they are engaging in their
design and interactivity.
Do you know some imaginative books?
Let me show you one!
(VIDEO)
Did you find the book engaging? Does it open your imagination?
That’s great because that is the main goal of an imaginative book and these kinds of books are called
children’s literature. They promote the development of students’ internal imaginations.
No. 5 Significance
Hi, my name is Rona.
And I love reading books because I believed reading books will foster my personality and social
development.
I remember during my formative years, I was very impressionable and easily influenced by others and I
also tend to be egocentric and struggle to see things from the perspective of others but as I grow older I
also begin to take into account the feelings and viewpoints of others and books help me develop into
caring, intelligent, and friendly person.
Not only that, reading books also foster my social development.
Books encourage me to accept other people and their differences.
Do you know some books that will foster your social development?
Let me show you one
Example: Tango Makes Three (Parnell & Richardson, 2005) or Heather Has Two Mommies (Newman &
Souza, 1989) ---- video or something that supplement the example.
What can you say about the story?
Yes, the story encourages us to become more open-minded to different types of families and understand
that love is the most important thing in a family.
Do you know that books will not just encourage us to become more open minded but it also encourages
us to develop relationships with people and encouraging social contact?
Let me show you an example.
Example: Loop the Loop (Dugan, 1992)
What did you notice in the story?
Yes, it is about friendship. In this story Loop the Loop atypical friendship is depicted, where a young child
and an elderly person become good friends and share the common joy of playing with yo-yos.
In this story I have realized that age doesn’t matter in friendship as long as you are enjoying each other’s
company.
Do you want another story that will foster your personality and social development?
Okay, let me show you another one.
Example: A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever
In this story the boys learn to think of the needs of others when they build a diorama for the grandpa
who is fascinated with penguins. So, this story is about being kind and concern with other people.
At the end, I have realized that literature help us in many ways, and literature encourages us to be
considerate and friendly, and these traits may be consistent with developing us into quality citizens.
No. 6 Significance
Narrator
There was a wanderer whose name is HIRAYA. He loves reading books of values. He loves to explore and
discover the things within him.
He believes that reading is powerful and literature is timeless.
His favorites are Dr. Seuss’ And to Think That I Heard it on Mulberry Street and The Cat in the Hat
.............
Act 1
Ohh... what a great day!
How fantastic. I love seeing books like this. It helps me recognize the culture, tradition and everything
that boosts my values.
I love reading Dr. Seuss’ And to Think That I Heard it on Mulberry Street and The Cat in the Hat
I love the story follows a boy named Marco, who describes a parade of imaginary people and vehicles
traveling along a road, Mulberry Street, in an elaborate fantasy story he dreams up to tell his father at
the end of his walk. However, when he arrives home, he decides instead to tell his father what he
actually saw—a simple horse and wagon.
The story centers on a tall anthropomorphic cat who wears a red and white-striped hat and a red bow
tie. The Cat shows up at the house of Sally and her brother one rainy day when their mother is away.
Despite the repeated objections of the children's fish, the Cat shows the children a few of his tricks in an
attempt to entertain them. In the process, he and his companions, Thing One and Thing Two, wreck the
house. As the children and the fish become more alarmed, the Cat produces a machine that he uses to
clean everything up and disappears just before the children's mother comes home.
.................
Narrator
Because he loves to read, his vocabulary became broader and he simply connects to the story. He has the
ability to easily get the idea as he contextualizes what he is reading.
Act 2
... i have this dream to become a person full of wisdom. A person who knows so much literature and
literate.
Literacy will help me break the code in every riddle that was thrown to me.
‘Reading books makes me powerful; it sends me in another world, helps me discover the history and
transfer the heritage of our ancestors’
If i become what i dreamed, i will share this for it is valuable and timeless. I will share them the quality
literature to inspire them to read, write and learn.
And that’s THE END OF OUR STORY FOR TODAY
I love this story and I had such a fun time reading this book for you!
DID YOU ENJOY THE STORY? GREAT!
DID YOU LEARN A LOT FROM TODAY’S STORY?
HMM, AS FOR ME, I HAVE LEARNED BUNCH OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SIGNIFICANCE LITERATURE
IN TEACHING STUDENTS LIKE YOU! I HOPE YOU HAD FUN AND HAD A FRUITFUL TIME LISTENING TO
OUR STORY FOR TODAY! GOOD DAY, BEAUTIFUL YOUNG GIRLS AND BOYS!
CONCLUSION
And that’s the end of our creative story-telling presentation. I believe that after seeing this video, we,
future educators, will have a better understanding of the importance of literature in educating children
and how it influences and how it impacts and improves children's developing areas.
In this module we learn the six values. The first value to be mentioned is that children’s literature
provides students with the opportunity to respond to literature and develop their own opinions about the
topic.
Second, children’s literature provides an avenue for students to learn about their own cultural heritage
and the cultures of other people.
Third, children’s literature helps students develop emotional intelligence. Stories have the power to
promote emotional and moral development.
Fourth, Children’s literature also encourages creativity.
Fifth, Children’s literature is of value because it fosters personality and social development.
And lastly, children’s literature is of value because it is a timeless tradition, one in which “books are the
major means of transmitting our literary heritage from one generation to the next”
All in all, it is indeed important for children's success to expose them to a wide range of literature.
Educators, parents, and community members should work together to help children develop a love and
enthusiasm for reading. Reading literature is beneficial not just for improving cognitive abilities needed
to thrive in school or at job, but it is also beneficial for other reasons. Children’s literature is an effective
tool for teaching children about what is going on in the world, as well as about themselves and others.
Children’s literature helps children to engage in brainstorming, creation, language enrichment, and the
development of their information base and personal character. Furthermore, respectable children's
literature broadens children's cognitive backgrounds, develops their knowledge and creativity, and
allows them to grow in greater communication skills and respect for others. On a personal level, children
may relate to the characters, events, places, and issues in literature. Lastly, exposing children to quality
literature can contribute to the creation of responsible, successful, and caring individuals.
