Lesson Plan - Work Motivation
Double Class Period - 150 mins
Before Class:
● Students read textbook chapter on Workplace Motivation
● Students take online quiz on assigned reading
Broad Objective: Learn and apply motivational theory to the workplace
Learning Goals:
1. Students will be able to analyze and critique different theories of motivation, through a process of
compare and contrast.
2. Students will be able to use motivational theory to explain employee’s behaviors in the workplace
through hands-on activities such as case studies and/or videos.
● Question of the Day (Minute Paper / Think-Pair-Share) - 10 mins
a. Think about something (at work/school/home) in which you were motivated to do well.
Why were you so motivated?
b. Now think about something (at work/school/home) in which you were not very
motivated. Why the lack of motivation?
● Review Theories of Motivation - 45 mins
a. Describe each theory by filling the blanks
b. Compare and contrast the theories of work motivations
c. Identify shortcomings and boundary conditions of each theory
● Mini-Lesson: Expectancy Theory - 20 mins
○ Students watch a clip from The Office and apply expectancy theory to it. Do Think-Pair-
Share in terms of how expectancies between effort-rewards- performance were used to
increase employees’ work motivation in the clip.
● Discussion: Operant Conditioning Theory - 15 mins
○ Review the concepts of rewarding excellent performance and punishing poor
performance. Ask students which approach they think would be more effective and why
(write down answers and then cold call, write responses on the board)
● Mini-Lesson: Goal-Setting Theory - 20 mins
○ Students complete the same task, unknowingly assigned to one of three different goal
conditions. Collect results and generate a graph with the data to see how the different
goals impacted performance. Discuss SMART goals.
● Case Study: Fairness & Ethics - 20 mins
○ Discuss the fairness/ethics issues of Hooter’s case study where the chain promised a new
car to the server who sold the most beer in the month. But it was a prank; the prize
actually turned out to be a Yoda doll.
● Muddiest Point - 10 mins
○ Each student takes 1-2 minutes to write down their “muddiest point” from the topic of
Work Motivation and turns it in before leaving class.
