PRACTICE OF GOAL SETTING.

PRACTICE OF GOAL SETTING.
Talking about the time I set a goal that I didn’t or rather, couldn’t
achieve
was last two years when I initially decided to further my education, I planned,
and even wrote down how I was going to start school, but then, it didn’t work,
simply because I couldn’t put serious action towards the actualization of my
dream or goal. Fast forward to this year, I decided that I was going to actualize
my goal of furthering my education, after writing it down and making plans, I
added effort to my plans towards the actualization of my goal by applying for an
admissions into the university of the people, that was how I finally succeeded in
actualizing my goal of furthering my education.
Clearly, the difference between these two scenarios is the input of
active effort, a goal or dream will always be unmoved until there is a conscious
action by the owner of the goal, plan or even dream, towards the actualization of

the goal. So, I can state absolutely, that active effort is a crucial factor in the
achieving of goals.
Effective goal setting involves certain characteristics, which if they are
not in place, there’s a high probability that goals may not be achieved, therefore,
effective goal setting serves as a guideline for an effective goal planning and
actualization.
The characteristics of good goals are summarized in this acronym “SMART,” by
Peter Drucker in his seminal work, The Practice Of Management, in 1954, which
represents_Specific, Measureable, Aggressive, Realistic, and Time-bound.
(Carpenter, Bauer, & Erdogan, 2010, p. 57-60)
A good goal must be specific, that is, it must not be ambiguous, it must be
measureable, which involves questions like, “how would you know whether you

have reached your goal?.”
Aggressive means that it must be something challenging, something that is
normally not easy, talking about realistic, a good goal, though challenging, should
also be realistic, it must not be something that is clearly beyond your human
capability at any given time.
Finally, time-bound, a good goal must have a time limit, this provides the owner
of the goal a sense of urgency, seriousness and motivation to achieve the goal.
Also, a good goal should be something someone really desires or like to achieve,
without this, the person may not be serious in pursuing it. (College Success, 2015,
p. 56)
And like I shared in my experience, finally, there must be active efforts if the goal
or goals must be achieved.
