I. Title of the Project
“Building Healthy Community Environment, Our Development”
(Improving the Health and Environmental Conditions in
Barangay Malitam, Batangas City)
II. Location
The students will conduct the project at Barangay Malitam, Batangas City during semester of
2021. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 7,212. Malitam shares a common
border between Barangay Cuta and Wawa, Batangas City. Barangay Malitam is known to be a
very urban area. In this side of the city, a community started with only two families two decades
ago. Now, there are more than 200 hundred families in the Badjao community in Barangay
Malitam and Wawa, Batangas City. The river located at Malitam is the main source of livelihood
of the Badjao in the area. Despite the unclean and smelly river, they have no choice but to endure
their grimy surrounding. According to Gavino Oxillo, Barangay Councilor of Barangay Malitam,
education, livelihood and environmental health are very important for the stability of the Badjao
community.
III. Duration / Time of Implementation
The project will start on the 2nd week of December. The first activity entitled, Awareness
Campaign, will be held on December 9, 2020, at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Moreover, Activity 2 is
about Cleaning of River and Making of Creative Garbage Bins and Pots using Recycled
Material. On the second day, December 10, 2020, the cleaning of the river will be held from 8:00
am - 11:00 am, and the making of bins will be held from 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. For the Activity 3,
that will be held on the last day, December 11, 2020, will focus on the Health and Safety
Awareness Campaign, and Zumba Fitness. Health and Safety Awareness Campaign will be held
from 10 am - 12 pm, and the Zumba Fitness will be held from 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm.

IV. Type of Community Extension Services
In this project, we combine health and environmental programs to improve the condition in
Barangay Malitam. In the environmental program, there will be a coastal clean-up, solid waste
management and recycling of waste materials. For better health conditions of Barangay Malitam,
we will perform a zumba fitness and health awareness campaign. Making good choices is
important, but it is not enough to counteract poor environmental conditions that affect the
community's health. Since the environment has a large impact on health and well-being, an
important part of living well is doing the part to take care of the environment. We can work
together as proactive communities to foster a safe, happy, and healthy world for years to come.

IX. Total Cost of the Project
The estimated total cost of the expenditures of this project is Php 5,860.00. This includes all
the materials needed in the project such as cleaning materials, glue sticks and glue guns for
making recycling and also the food accommodation for the participants of the project. It also
includes the three days transportation of each member to arrive at the location.
X. Rationale of the Project
In a study conducted by Vanessa Castillo (2018), the proponent stated that the government
has observed a constant behavior within their residence in Batangas City. It was observed within
their 25 years of stay, the communities where they lived in remained dirty and poor. This
suggests an underlying problem within the community which affects the living quality of the
whole community. It is, after all, we cannot deny that our lives are directly affected by the

(Improving the Health and Environmental Conditions in Barangay Malitam, Batangas City)
environment in which we thrive. For instance, Badjaos are used to utilizing the bodies of water
to dispose of their wastes. This is why the local government has decided to assign a community
leader for the Badjaos. This is to help someone to guide them into a better standing. As a group,
we wanted to help as well in educating them about environmental issues and concerns and how
they could minimize them.
Furthermore, being stagnant in the state of being dirty and poor poses a threat to their health
and sanitation. Unsanitary environments can often lead to various diseases like diarrhea, skin
allergies, cough, and flu which puts the community at risk. In this kind of community, children
would be more susceptible to these risks due to their carelessness and negligence. It was
observed how children play on the dirt then eat without washing their hands. The people use the
river as their comfort room. Toddlers do not even wear underwear. These are just some issues
that need to be addressed not only to help the community but nature as well.
Through this project, we aim to enlighten even just a small community about things they can
do to improve the environmental state and the quality of their lives as well. We have prepared a
myriad of plans that could help alleviate the issues. We are planning to conduct seminars about
solid waste management. This would ensure that the project can be sustained even when we are
no longer involved. Furthermore, we are also planning a clean-up drive. This may be a temporary
solution but it could show them a perspective of a better environment. We also plan to teach
them recycling methods for a cheaper, more environmentally friendly approach to cleanliness.
All of these, if implemented properly, could drastically improve environmental and health
conditions in the community.
XI. Objectives
Generally, this project aims to let the community of barangay Malitam in Batangas City know
the essence of having a clean, neat, and healthy environment.
Specifically, it aims to:
1. To raise environmental awareness and self-responsibility for the people of barangay
Malitam.
2. To educate them on the proper segregation of wastes.
3. To keep the people of community in a healthy lifestyle and out of illness

(Improving the Health and Environmental Conditions in Barangay Malitam, Batangas City)
4. To initiate the sustainable waste system to the community.
XII. Description of the Project
Badjaos are a part of the Philippine’s 13 Islamized groups indigenous to Mindanao. They are
also referred to as “sea gypsies” which means “man of seas” as they most often live off of coastal
areas and therefore conceive fishing as their primary source of living. The geographical location
and accessibility of Barangay Malitam and its neighboring barangay play a huge role in the
increase of internal immigrants.
Due to their nature and nomadic traditions, Badjaos are often victims of extreme poverty.
However, as time progressed, the badjaos residing in Malitam, Batangas slowly became
employed due to the easier access to education. This reinforces the importance of education and
livelihood to the stability of the said community. Therefore, we have thought of ways to combine
both the educational and livelihood aspect in order to come up with a relevant project.
Fishing as their primary source of livelihood puts a lot of significance to the environmental
condition within the area. In order to retain bountiful marine harvests, they must continue to take
actions in pursuit to help the environment. Most of the time, water degradation doesn’t come
from the sea, it’s usually from the land. Perhaps a simple way of promoting proper solid waste
management could help the whole community in the long run. And perhaps it could be the small
help we’ll be able to provide that would change their perspective about the environment. We
plan to provide environmental education to mitigate its deterioration which could improve the
quality of living in the area.
In a study conducted by Vanessa Castillo (2018) about the social integration of Badjao
migrants in Malitam, it was mentioned that as a minority that has unorthodox, non-mainstream
aesthetic and traditions, the Badjao integration failed as they suffer discrimination and
deprivation of basic health and welfare services. Under this circumstance, we do not only aim to
help them with their environmental concerns but we also hope to make a more receptive and
welcoming community for them. We hope that as we try to provide education and aid, we are
able to make them feel included in today’s society where they may feel oppressed.

XV. Monitoring and Evaluation Mechanics
To ensure the success of our project, we must conduct a constant monitoring and evaluation
throughout the whole process. The leader is assigned with the overview of the project throughout
the whole project and should be the final deciding factor with the decisions we must make as a
team. The secretary is then assigned to the specific details of the project including the
documentation of the process. We have a choice between video or written documentations.
Going back, a treasurer is then assigned with the collection and safe storage of funds to be used
in the project. They should be able to utilize the budget properly for different needs. Each of
these people are significant in covering their own field of tasks to ensure that the project would
go smoothly.
XVI. Plans for Ensuring the Sustainability of the Project
As we put this project into action, these are the plans on how we will ensure the sustainability
of this project. The following are:
1. Financial Sustainability: This is to ensure that our budget for making this project is
enough and the flow of funds is maintaining and continuing its work.
2. Program Sustainability: To continue doing this project even in the absence of
beneficiaries or donor supporters.
3. To keep the project going, we will make sure that they will be well informed of the
things that they should always maintain in their community. We will make sure that
we’ve done everything that we need to do and to continue helping them in keeping their
community clean and safe. Lastly, to continue supporting and checking them after our
project.
