Numerical Methods Engineering Project

The document outlines the details of a project assignment for a numerics course. It provides the deadlines for forming project teams and submitting a report. The project involves applying numerical methods to computer programs to solve an engineering problem of finding forces on a loaded truss. Students must submit a team list by April 15, a final report by June 24, and participate in oral discussions during the last week of June to demonstrate their understanding of the project work. The project is worth 20% of the overall course grade.

Numerics Spring 2021

Project Assignment (20%)

The deadline for team list submission: 2:00 pm, Thu 15 Apr

The deadline for report submission: 2:00 pm, Thu 24 Jun

Sessions for oral discussion: 27 – 30 Jun

Project Teams
You are responsible to form, amongst yourselves, teams of 5 or 6 members each, for working on this
project. Every team should elect a representative of the team.
A list of members of each team, ordered by ID, should be submitted by 2:00 pm, Thu 15 Apr.
Please use the attached “Project Team Form”.
Note that the elected representative of the team should be marked “Rep”.

Aim of the Project

To apply appropriate numerical methods, incorporated into computer programs, to solve a problem
in engineering, specified below.

Problem Description
A truss is loaded as shown below.

You are required to apply numerical methods, incorporated into computer programs, to find the
forces, given the following data
|AB| = 4 m, |AD| = |DE| = 3 m, F1 = 74 kN, F2 = 24 kN.

Work Plan
1. Understand the problem. Appropriate diagrams will help.
2. Transform the problem into a linear system of equations.
3. Identify two different numerical methods to be applied.
4. For each method:
(a) draw a detailed flowchart to describe the algorithm,
(b) write a commented MatLab program,
(c) run the program, and obtain results, supported by appropriate diagrams.
5. Discuss and compare results.

Work Guide
The benefits out of this project go far beyond just learning application of numerical methods. In
order to make the most of it, you are encouraged to:
 discuss work with others,
 look up information in books at the library,
 search for information on the internet,
 seek help from staff and TAs.

Report Requirements
Every team should submit a collective technical report. The report should address the items in the
above Work Plan, including diagrams, flowcharts, computer programs and any other supporting
information.
The report should be typed on A4 paper and bound. The first page should be a neat cover page
including typed appropriate data.
Reports should be submitted by 2:00 pm, Thursday 24 Jun.

Oral Discussion
The report will be taken to represent collective work done by the team, and will be graded as such:
every member of the team will earn the same report grade.
However, at sessions of oral discussion every team member will have the opportunity to demonstrate
his/her understanding of the work presented, and to show how active he/she has been.
Sessions for oral discussion will be scheduled during the week 27 – 30 Jun.

Project Grading
Follow up (10×2) 20%
Report 60%
Oral Discussion 20%
