TITLE: COOLING CURVE
AIM : TO DETERMINE THE FREEZING POINT OF NAPHTHALENE USING A COOLING
CURVE
SKILL ASSESSED : A/I
CRITERIA MAXIMUM STUDENT’S
MARKS MARKS
DISCUSSION
1.During freezing, heat energy is released (given out) by the 2
liquid particles. They slow down and move closer together
to take up the orderly positions of a solid and bond
2.The temperature stops decreasing and remains constant
during freezing because bond-making releases heat. 1
3.The heat released compensates for the loss of heat to the 1
surroundings.
4.Once the bonding is complete, then the temperature 1
begins to fall again.
5.This is called the specific latent heat of freezing. 1
6.A freezing point graph (or cooling curve) of temperature 1
versus time can be plotted and
7. the freezing point of the liquid can be determined from
the horizontal part of the graph caused by the specific latent 2
heat of freezing.
8.When a substance is pure, the freezing point is sharp and 2
easily determined as the horizontal part of the curve.
Theoretically, the freezing point of pure naphthalene is
800C.
9.However, when the substance is impure, the cooling curve 1
forms a different shape and the freezing point is generally
lower than that of the pure substance.
READINGS OFF THE GRAPH
Correctly states freezing point of pure naphthalene 1
Has a graph that cuts more than half of the page both ways 1
Draws a curve of best fit 1
Records observation through the construction of a table. 1
(Table has suitable headings, has units for variables, records
all necessary data 1mk each)
SOURCES OF ERROR 2
The timing or reading of the temperature were not done
accurately
CONCLUSION
Impurities change the freezing point of the naphthalene 1
Related to aim 1
