2. construct persuasive essay using the information from various sources;
and
3. synthesize essential information found in various sources (EN8WC-lllc-
1.1.6);

1
Day 1
Let Us Try!
Let us begin this lesson by identifying first which of the following are
examples of primary sources or secondary sources. This also serves as
review of what you have learned from your previous lesson. Here are
definitions for you to get started.

A Primary Source is an A Secondary Source is an

information that was created information from someone
at the same time as an event else or by a person not
or by a person directly directly involved in the event.
involved in the event.

Activity 1: FIND THE SOURCE

Directions: Write (P) if the example below is a primary source and (S) for secondary
sources.

________ 1. A cartoon showing how Pocahontas met John Smith.

________ 2. A news report about the opening of a powerplant.
________ 3. A Vietnam veteran talking about the war in Vietnam.
________ 4. A YouTube video describing how pyramids were built.
________ 5. A classmate giving a report about World War 2.

Activity 2: MULTIPLE CHOICE

Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer. Write the chosen letter on a separate
sheet of paper.

C. Narrating stories
D. All of the above

4. As you read critically your sources, you have to remember the following
questions except one.
a. Do some authors disagree with another author?
b. Does one author extend the research of another author?
c. Are the authors all in agreement?
d. Does any author do not raise question or new ideas about
the topic?
5. Below are the important uses of synthesizing essential information
from various sources except one.
A. You share the key points from an individual source and then move on and
summarize another source.
B. You need to combine the information from those multiple sources and add your
own analysis of the literature.
C. You can combine current information in your field of study and add a
new interpretation or analysis of those sources.
D. You need to think about how all of the ideas and findings are connected.

Great Job! You have successfully identified the different

sources of information. You are now ready to embark in
our new lesson that increases the knowledge and skills
you learned from the previous topics.

3
Lesson Synthesize essential
1 information found in
various sources.
Let Us Study
In this lesson, you will be taught on how to use information from several
sources to create new ideas based on your analysis on the text. This process
is called synthesis. Through this lesson, you will also learn how to combine multiple
resources and ideas.

When asked to synthesize sources and research, many writers start to

summarize individual sources. However, this is not the same as synthesis. In a
summary, you share the key points from an individual source and then move on and
summarize another source. In synthesis, you need to combine the information from
multiple sources and add your own analysis of the literature. This means that each
of your paragraph will include multiple sources and citations, as well as your own
ideas and voice.

To give you a clear understanding on how synthesizing essential information

from various sources works, let us begin first on learning how to synthesize simple
sentences.

Observe the following simple sentences and notice how simple sentences
turned into compound sentence.

1. He has failed many times. He still hopes to succeed.

➢ In spite of many failures, he still hopes to succeed.

2. Jane is quite friendly. Her brother is rather reserved.

➢ Jane is quite friendly whereas her brother is rather reserved.

3. She wanted to pass the examination. She studied hard.

➢ He studied hard to pass the examination.

What have you observed in the following sentences? Is there any change in
the thought of the sentences presented after it was combined?

4
Day 2

Let Us Practice
Activity 1: Building Your Background
Read the sentences carefully and observe how these sentences were combined to
make one idea. Take note of the highlighted phrases.

Buddhism was
found in 2500 Buddhism, one He has failed
years ago. It is of the greatest many times. He Having failed
one of the religions, was still hopes to for many
greatest found in 2500 win. times, he still
religions. years ago. hopes to win.

What do you observe in the highlighted words? What ways are used to combine the
two sentences? How are the sentences combined?

The illustrations above are used to explain how synthesis works using
simple or compound sentences.
In picture #1, the highlighted words are used to construct an
appositive phrase. The simple sentences were combined using a phrase in
apposition.
In picture #2, the highlighted words are used to construct a gerund
phrase. The simple sentences were combined using a preposition with
gerund.
If you notice, the two simple sentences are combined to create new
idea. The highlighted words are just few of the many ways to combine
sentences into one large simple
5 sentence.
When combining two sentences, you may use conjunctions and
verbal.
Activity 2: Let’s do the practice: Sentence Synthesis Exercise

Directions: Combine the sets of sentences into one large simple sentence. You
may also use conjunctions in creating new sentences.

Example: He wrote the letter. He sent it through the messenger.

Answer: He wrote a letter and sent it through the messenger.

1. She was tired of trying. She decided to quit.

____________________________________________________________
2. Tom plays hockey. He plays cricket.
__________________________________________________________________
3. He is well-versed in English. He was appointed as the English teacher in
the school.
__________________________________________________________________
4. We must finish this exercise. There are still three sentences.
__________________________________________________________________
5. I have some duties. I must perform them.
__________________________________________________________________

In the previous activities, you have learned how to synthesize

. simple sentences to create a large simple sentence using different
ways of combining sentence. This is just simple way of synthesizing
essential ideas.

The next set of sections will enable you to pull together the
most important points from your reading and use these points to
move beyond what’s stated by the [Link] will be asked to focus
on the insights that you have gained from your reading in order to
put your thinking and learning in new ways.

For the next activity, you will connnect all the information you
know about the topic, the things you want to know, and the new
information that you have learned about the topic.

Let’s get started!

Activity 3: CONNECTING YOUR EXPERIENCE

• For this activity, you will connect all the information you know,
the things you want to know and the new information that you
have learned about the topic.

6
Question: What do you know about Korean drama?

Directions: A. Fill in The KWL Chart below by answering the question above. For the
K column, write the things you know about the topic. For the W column, the things
you want to know about Korean dramas and for the L column, the new information
you have learned about Korean dramas.

K W L

B. Answer the questions truthfully.

1. How many Korean Dramas have you seen on television?
___________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

2. Why do you watch and enjoy them?

___________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________

For the next task, you will be asked to read an

exposition article on how Korean dramas touched the lives of
many young Filipinos. These articles will also be used later
when you do synthesize.

7
What is synthesizing?
• According to Cambridge Dictionary (2020), synthesizing is
putting separate facts or ideas together to form a single
piece of work. Synthesizing is also similar to baking a cake.
When you bake a cake, you combine all the separate
ingredients like the eggs, flour, sugar, butter etc.- to make
a new thing. When you synthesize, you take what you
already know and mix it with what you have learned from
a reading and discussion to create new ideas and
understandings.
• At the very basic level, synthesis refers to combining
multiple sources and ideas. As a writer, you will use
information from several sources to create new ideas based
on your analysis from what you have read.

For example:
For me, being a kpop fan and k-drama addict is both good and bad.
Watching k-dramas and seeing k-pop idols can serve as stress reliever. As a
student, I have a lot of assignments to finish and I find k-dramas as an escape
from the stress. However, too much negatively affects my studies. I often forgot
to do my homework as I over spend time watching k-dramas at night.
Most k-pop fans are college students and teenagers. The music's melody,
the features of their k-pop idols, the style of k-pop group presentation, and their
hard to memorize and unique killer dance moves made their fans love and
idolize them more. Right now, there are lot of fans who are head-over-heels with
k-pop.
In the country of South Korea, the popularity of Korean culture has really
contributed a lot to the growth of their economy due to TV dramas, films and
music that draw visitors and become just like a domino effect. These tourists
have brought billions of dollars to the region. In economic and cultural regions,
Korea is now experiencing a double boom (Anjaiah, 2011).
Filipino youths are also influenced by the Korean looks, to have a Korean look,
is to have a Korean hairstyles in order to have that Korean sense of fashion.
Korean hairstyles have become popular today in the Philippines (Kapuso Mo
Jessica Soho, 2010).

These are author’s personal point of view.

The writer has included multiple resources on the article.

8
Below are two examples of synthesis: one where synthesis is NOT utilized well, and
one where it is.

Example 1:
Parents are always trying to find ways to encourage healthy eating in their children.
Elena Pearl Ben-Joseph, a doctor and writer for KidsHealth, encourages parents to
be role models for their children by not dieting or vocalizing concerns about their
body image. The first popular diet began in 1863. William Banting named it the
“Banting” diet after himself, and it consisted of eating fruits, vegetables, meat, and
dry wine. Despite the fact that dieting has been around for over a hundred and fifty
years, parents should not diet because it hinders children’s understanding of healthy
eating.

[Link]
verview/synthesizing_sources.html

• In this sample paragraph, one idea begins then drastically shifts to another. Rather
than comparing the sources, the author simply describes their content. This leads
the paragraph to end in a different way. It also keeps the paragraph from
expressing strong arguments or conclusions.

Example 2:
Parents are always trying to find ways to encourage healthy eating in their children.
Different scientists and educators have different strategies for promoting a well-
rounded diet while still encouraging body positivity in children. David R. Just and
Joseph Price suggest in their article “Using Incentives to Encourage Healthy Eating
in Children” that children are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables if they are given
a reward (855-856). Similarly, Elena Pearl Ben-Joseph, a doctor and writer for Kids
Health, encourages parents to be role models for their children. She states that
“parents who are always dieting or complaining about their bodies may foster these
same negative feelings in their kids. Try to keep a positive approach about food” (Ben-
Joseph). Martha J. Nepper and Weiwen Chai support Ben-Joseph’s suggestions in
their article “Parents’ Barriers and Strategies to Promote Healthy Eating among
School-age Children.” Nepper and Chai note, “Parents felt that patience, consistency,
educating themselves on proper nutrition, and having more healthy foods available
in the home were important strategies when developing healthy eating habits for their
children.” By following some of these ideas, parents can help their children develop
healthy eating habits while still maintaining body positivity. •

overview/synthesizing_sources.html

• In this example, the author puts different sources in conversation with one another.
Rather than simply describing the content of the sources in order, the author uses
transitions (like "similarly") and makes the relationship between the sources
evident.

• How is synthesis different from summarizing? What strategies can you use to
synthesize your information? Why do you need to learn to synthesize?

9
Activity 1: Build Your Skills
Read the expositions and click the link below and do the activities that
follow.
Source # 1: Korean Dramas Continue to Captivate the Philippines by Jonathan
Hicap

In the field of drama, Korean plays came when radio broadcasting in Korea
began in 1927 under Japanese rule. In 1934, the first original radio drama, ‘The
Elder Coachman”, was introduced and followed by the first serial which aired in
1936.

Radio dramas continued after the Korean War. In 1956, TV broadcasting

began in South Korea, primarily as adaptations of stage plays or novels. Later in
1990s, K-drama or KD’s for short (televised dramas aired as a mini-series or more
often as telenovelas) were produced in South Korea. Many of these dramas have
become popular throughout Asia, with the growing interest in other parts of the
world. K-dramas have contributed to the general phenomenon of the Korean wave,
known as Hallyu (Hangul) and “Drama Fever” in some countries.

Since then, modern and historical dramas or miniseries became a hit

overseas. The year 1997 marked the beginning of the “Korean wave” in television,
especially when Korean government began providing low cost or free dramas to the
TV networks of many African and South American countries.

In 2002, Winter Sonata aired in Japan and was a huge success. In the
Phiilippines, Korean teleseryes became very popular in the 2000s, too. A number of
Philippine television networks have been airing a score of dramas like the following:

2002 - Winter Sonata

2003 - Stairway to Heaven
2004 - Full House, Lovers in Paris
2005 - My Girl
2006 - Jumong
2007 - Coffee Prince
2009 - Dongyi
2010 - Secret Garden
2011 - Lie To Me
2013 - That Winter, The Wind Blows

Filipinos love Koreanovelas because they can relate to the plot lines or
situations. Most of the time, Korean dramas are quite disconcerting and moving.
Aside from the touching plot lines, the production is really a visual experience of the
places that most of us have not seen. According to a film reviewer, Korean dramas

10
are characterized as having excellent production quality, well-drawn but
stereotypical characters, and intelligent scriptwriting

Source #2: Why Millennials Love Korean Drama

WHY-MILLENNIALS-LOVE-KOREAN-DRAMA-578648
December 7, 2017
KOREAN drama or K-Drama has been gaining support from Filipino fans,
especially millennial.

Some of the popular K-Dramas aired in different television stations in the country
are Lovers in Paris, Stairway to Heaven, Boys over Flowers, City Hunter, Princess
Hours, The Heirs, and Goblin: The Lonely and Great God.

But what do these K-dramas have that Filipinos love?

Millennials said in an interview with Sun Star Philippines that they love
Korean dramas because of the plot, especially the twists, which is different from
Filipino dramas.

“I love K-Dramas because they offer a refreshing kind of storytelling that I

don't find in common sex-bombarded western plotlines and shows. Oppas (means
older brothers) seem like the human versions of the anime ‘senpais’ I used to watch,
so that's definitely a plus. The girls are so attractive too, so if you're bisexual like me,
it's really a win-win situation. Story-wise, I love the creativity of the stories. Clichés
can't be avoided, but I like how they're willing to try fantasy or other seemingly
outrageous plots but effectively nail them. The cinematography is very impressive.
(Almost) everything about K-Dramas are just so captivating and one can't help but
be addicted to (almost all of) them,” said Erica Dancel, who has been watching K-
Dramas since 2012.

Trisha Oliveros, who claims to be a fan for 10 years, said: “First, I really like
how the plot or the story is written. I'm sick of watching Filipino dramas that only
have this ‘kabit’ or ‘mahirap naging mayaman’ theme compared to K-Drama where
you can choose anything that suits your taste. Second, the cinematography is so
good. The actors play their roles really well. Third, I like their plot twists and their
dramas are not that long. Fourth, I learned many things aside from how to make pa-
cute to Oppa. Plus, who would have thought sci-cal, fantasy and horror dramas are
not that boring since they add romantic-comedy spice in it.”

“Watching K-Drama can make you feel the feelings they want to convey.

11
Handsome Oppas are a big plus but the storyline itself is not that cliché as to what
we used to here. They focus mostly on the culture of their country and associate it
to their story and enhance it with their imagination. They also entice you with their
wits and crazy antics and that makes me want to watch more. K-Drama did not focus
only on the bf-gf thing but focuses on all the aspects of life where everyone who
watches their drama will be drawn more and more and be hooked with it," said
Jheska Mhae Buton, who is an avid fan of K-Dramas for almost nine years.

Here are some of the reactions we got from SunStar Philippines Facebook poll.
Kim Avenido Amor said K-Dramas have nice and interesting plots, good pacing, great
and catchy soundtracks/musical scoring, and good casting.

She added that actors are not just pretty faces but they got real talent and
the production is awesome regardless of genre.
"Fresh concepts and plots. It is also noticeable how they encourage patriotism in
their dramas," said Crisch Abayon.

They are never afraid to experiment on their stories. Production-wise, it's well-
crafted. Grabe ang effort sa mga actors and the prod team for a series lang alone.
Makita nimo the way nagdagan ang series itself," said Franz Correa .

"Because every story is unique, lovable, amazing, romantic and funny #SSKDrama,"
said Rap Monstter.

Miko enumerated the reasons why he loves K-Dramas.

"1. Plot/Story - never antiquated and always gives you excitement on what's going to
happen next. 2. Cast - the artists they chose fit to the character as what we visualize
in our head. Also, whoever the love teams they put in, it’s always full of chemistry
and charisma. 3. Theme songs/OST - Somehow once you heard the song, you're
going to love the show also. It’s like tracking its origin then discover the show
#SSKDRAMA" he said.

"Stories are very well written; plots are interesting and unique; actors portray
their characters with individualism and it's not only the main actors that carry the
drama but the whole cast; great chemistry between the leads even though they don't
have the so-called "loveteams"; great drama locations that left viewers in awe; catchy
OSTs (Official Sound Tracks); not all of them have the typical fairy tale happy ending,
endings are realistic, and of course, leads are 'oppalicious'..hahaha #SSKDrama"
said Lorilane E. Escuadro.

of the drama.
________________________________________________________________________

Were you able to accomplish the activities above? How

did you come up with your answers? How did the exposition
article help you increase your competence in synthesizing
essential information?
Early on, you took a glimpse of how Korean dramas reach
in the English-speaking countries. The previous exercises also
helped you immerse in various texts, think critically about the
author’s different perspectives and develop your own ideas.
As you continue studying this module, you will be
learning to appreciate the function of synthesis and the different
strategies used in synthesizing various information.
13
• Learning to synthesize can be challenging for some students but there are few
different strategies that you can use like the following:

1. The REST Method

R - read two different sources about the topic and record
ideas.
E - edit notes and combine concepts that are similar
S - synthesize by combining notes with what you already
know about the topic
T - think about your new ideas and connect them to what
you already know.
2. The ADD Method
If you are struggling with synthesizing, you can use this method. ADD is similar
to REST, but it can be used with just one text. The advantage of ADD is that it will
help you learn to integrate your learning with what you already know and your
discussions with your classmates.
A - what you already know about the topic

D - what you learned during the reading on the same topic.

D - what you learned during the discussion of the topic

3. The RAP Strategy
Read, Ask, Put in my own words (R.A.P.) is a flexible three-step strategy that
students use to improve reading comprehension through questioning and
paraphrasing. Students read a passage or text and then ask questions to help
summarize what they have read in their own words. Student-generated R.A.P.
questions can be used in a variety of contexts, including narrative, expository, or
informational texts, as a self-monitoring strategy.
Source:[Link]
sk_put_in_my_own_words.pdf
4. Venn Diagram
You can also use a Venn Diagram in synthesizing. You can use this method
to record facts about two topics, which go in the large outer circles and then record
overlapping facts and ideas where the circles overlap. From this diagram, you can
formulate your own ideas and thoughts about the topic. However, keep in mind that
Venn diagram really works well with simple topics and comparisons.

• Use the following steps to synthesize information from different sources.

1. Identify your topic

Congratulations for a job well done!
In the exposition article, you were enlightened on how Korean
dramas continue to captivate the Filipino viewers. You were also taught
on the process of synthesizing. This process is nothing new to you,
since you infer relationships all the time- say, between something you
have read in the newspaper and something you’ve seen for yourself or
between the teaching styles of your favorite teacher.
Let’s learn more about the lesson. You may now proceed to the
next task.

Let Us Enhance
In this final phase of the lesson, you will apply the insights you have
learned, the skills you have developed and information you have gathered from
the previous activities. Your task now will involve more of your skills in
synthesizing essential information from various sources.

Activity 1: Write Your Thoughts: Informative Article

An informative article gives the reader unbiased facts about the topic.
It provides the readers with details on a given topic. It provides readers with
information on a specific subject. It is not an argumentative piece in which
the author attempts to convince the reader to take one side or the other. It
includes all pertinent information, such as who, what, when, where, and why.
Informative articles are used in newspaper reporting.
I would like you to read a variety of sources on the subject you've
chosen to aid you in writing your informative article. In presenting your new
idea/s about the subject, combine all of the information you've gathered from
your readings.
Directions: Express your own opinion on all of these subjects while keeping
your writing short and straightforward. Remember to highlight the things you
learned from your readings.
• How the computer changed the lives of the students
• The importance of regular exercise
• Global Pandemic
• Your choice

By writing your own voice, you demonstrate to your teacher that:

• You can define a topic.

• You can discuss a concept coherently.
• You can apply the construct to a hypothetical situation.
• You can pull together different theories.

And remember, synthesizing is not the same with

summarizing.
