Inorganic scale control has presented challenges over the decades. Management of the
more conventional sulfate and carbonate scales has vastly improved with developments
in scale prediction, inhibitor performance testing, new molecules for harsher conditions,
better deployment methods and improved monitoring. Fresh technical and commercial
issues have emerged as the oil industry has developed more challenging reservoirs with
higher pressures/temperature, higher concentrations of H2S, higher shear conditions with
use of inflow control devices in production wells, and enhanced oil recovery utilizing novel
chemicals and gases. This session will highlight these very challenges via a range of field
application and fundamental research papers.

09 Chemical Additives for Unconventional Reservoirs | Greenland

A rich array of papers comprise this session that centers on shale plays and the chemical
additives required to most efficiently produce hydrocarbons.. A fundamental review of the
Eagle Ford Shale lithology will be presented, as well as how different brine types affect
formation damage of shales during stimulation. A review of a novel method for paraffin
control during fracturing using water dispersible chemistry has been included. This topic will
be followed by one addressing a major focus on surfactant chemistry used during hydraulic
fracturing to function as flowback aids either in a single phase or in a microemulsified form.
